This would be a great moment for us to share ideas to use Flickr in the classroom, or even to look for partners for simple visual collaborative projects. Feel at home. This space is ours!

Hi Carla,
Flickr can take the place of the visual aids we've been using if we want. I'm not saying that we wouldn't use flashcards and magazine pictures anymore but everything you do with them you can do with the pictures from Fickr, and much more. Besides that there's this issue of interection which Flickr allows us to have. I liked the ideas given in the article 'Motivating Language Learners with Flicker ' .
I think people in general like having the chance to give their opinions about most things, and no doubt with Flicker students can exchange opinions, share information, ideas, ask questions, read and write.... learn.

Hi Cecília,
I agree with you. We can enhance our classes by showing students the photos they, the students, we or our friends have taken. They are may be much more meaningful and interesting for them. They can share and talk about their experiences besides interacting with other people all over the world.

Hi Girls!
What you have written made me think of an activity I could do with my FCE students. You know that for the Speaking Paper in the Cambridge First Certificate examination, candidates have to compare and contrast photos.
Students could use photos uploaded to Flickr to work collaboratively, trying to find similarities and differences in pairs of photos and expressing their opinion about them.
Seeing what people from different backgrounds can say about the photos would certainly improve their visual literacy.

@Cecília @Marie you're so right that Flickr enlivens and makes our classroom much more exciting. Cecília, rarely do I use flashcards in my classes. My computer screen became my dynamic flascards!
The fact that you can ask, see photos from around the world is just fantastic, isn't it?

@Mary di Monaco what an interesting idea! In fact, I'd teach them how to search tagged photos here, or even ask them to upload photos the took related to a certain topic and then compare and contrast.

Hi guys! I love what you're doing with Flickr this week! I wanted to share a simple project that I started with Flickr. It is called globalcookbook flickr.com/groups/globalcookbook/ I asked people to share their pictures of food from their countries and tag them with "globalcookbook". If you use the search box and type in "globalcookbook" you will see that there are about 40 beautiful photos of food there! flickr.com/search/?q=globalcookbook It is great to be able to show such great photos to students! Also, students could add their own photos and comments too. This is an ongoing project, so if you want to join, just tag a food related photo "globalcookbook"

I think we can use Flickr anywhere visual images are required, such as presentation, etc:

• For single image analysis.
• For single image writing prompt, where an individual will post an image and a person will start a story as a comment, with the story continued by multiple viewers adding more to the story through comments.
• For multiple image digital storytelling projects.
• For creating slides shows within Flickr.
• For virtual Field Trips in order to see the best images.
• For the creation of visual arguments, e.g. In a biology classroom- such as The Case for Genetic Engineering.
• For illustrating poetry with Flickr with tags as well as single images.
• For geotagging images and then using Google Earth to teach Geography.
• For the visual documentation of school events.
• For the visual documentation of student artwork and other school learning products.
• For the creation of digital visual portfolios, using the photoset function of Flickr.
• To teach about social software: how to tag, how to make comments, etc. (where are we teaching kids how to constructively comment on the work of others?).
• For the delivery of school/classroom visual information via RSS.

Hi all,

Inspired by your great ideas, I just thought of this activity:

I'd use Flickr to help my EFL/ESP classes practice writing in a fun way. For example, to practice Process Paragraph Writing, they can take photos using their mobile-cameras or digital cameras (most students have mobilephones in my country) of the steps of an experiment they're required to do in a science class, and then, have them upload the photos to Flickr, adding the description of each step under its photo to complete their process writing paragraphs. This activity can also be used for your learners to practice Describing Paragraph Writing. I'd give them 5-10 minutes at the beginning of our class to leave the classroom to take a shot of anything they'd like to describe, e.g. a tree, a building, etc., and then, have them upload the photo and write their description paragraphs. This activity can be done individually, in pairs, in groups (depending on class size)

With Flickr, a simple composition has huge possibilities.
A blog post can be much more creative.
Students can add a new dimension to their learning process.
Much more fun and meaningful.

Andy, I'm glad you feel this way about Flickr. How would specifically use Flickr for writing? Would love to see some of your ideas here.
