About Weber Spur Trail
The Weber Spur Trail is a primitive trail on the far north side of Chicago, which is a former Union Pacific Railroad right of way. The trail is made up of loose gravel (the rails were removed last year). It runs southwest to northeast. It begins approximately at Wilson & Cicero and runs northeast to just southwest of the Lincolnwood Town Mall in Lincolnwood. The trail has easy access at ground grade from it's northern terminus to Bryn Mawr (where it meets up with the Sauganash Trail, a rebuilt biking & hiking trail, formerly the Valley Line rail road right of way). The trail runs through LaBagh Woods and there are several access points from the trails and picnic areas in the Forest Preserve. South of Foster there are a couple of access points, but the trail is mostly inaccessible from the ground south of Elston. The trail is a haven for many forms of wildlife. White-tail Deer are frequent visitors. Also seen are Coyotes. Cooper's & Red Tail Hawks are regularly observed. Also large varieties of birds including Chickadees, Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Owls, Finches and many other Passerines during the spring & fall migrations. Even a Bald Eagle was spotted this year. During the summer, large numbers of Dragonflies & Damselflies congregate around the abandoned railroad bridge over the Chicago River. The most interesting are the Ebony Jewel Wing Damselflies.
This group is intended for photos taken along this trail. There are plans in the works to improve the trail into a bike trail, similiar to what was done with the Sauganash Trail. Let's enjoy it while it still is totally wild.
