About Watching the Detectives
This group is for images of the UK Police using heavy-handed tactics at protests and demonstrations.
We are all citizen journalists now. It is hoped that this group will form a growing library of images which hold the Police to account for their actions at protests.
The G20 protests in London in April 2009 are only the most recent example in a long list where policing tactics have been considered very draconian. Photographic and video footage from that event played a major role in prompting a major review of policing (google 'HMIC Adapting to Protest').
This is NOT an anti-Police group. Policing protests is a difficult and complex job. And in every protest that turns violent, there are a few protestors who must share the blame with the Police. But while violent protestors can be arrested, who holds the Police to account?
By sharing images of what you perceive to be unnecessarily heavy-handed policing, we can build a library of citizen photojournalism that puts into the public domain abuses of policing powers.
Please also visit the blog that acts as a repository of information about policing of protest and the role citizen photojournalists can play in making the police more accountable:

This group has been put together by photojournalist Harmit Kambo (www.harmitkambo.com) who has an active interest in civil liberties and the rights of campaigners and activists.
The more photos we take and share, the more transparent and fair the Police are going to have to be. Anyone with a camera can be a citizen photojournalist.
