Food in Washington Heights - a long-winded request

view profile

Susan NYC is a group administrator Susan NYC  Pro User  says:

My track record finding good places to eat in the Heights is dismal.

Sometimes I'll go to a place and it's delicious, the people are nice, etc. - and the next time everything tastes old and stale.

For a while I tried out the pupusa restaurants on B'way in the 170s and 180s - but none was really good after the second visit.

I've tried out several Dominican restaurants, mostly on B'way and 181st. I think I just don't know what to order?

I've tried the Equadorian place across from Goodwill on 181st Street - but not for a long time. There I had problems with my miserable Spanish, and although the people were really nice, I ended up with a dish composed of rice, a fried egg, and some dried-out beef.

The places on 187th Street leave a lot to be desired, too - especially since some of them cost so much.

Enough complaining. I've made my point.

So, my question is this: will you recommend a restaurant and/or a particular dish to order there?

I've only ever ordered delivery from this place - never dined in. Kismat has decent Indian food (if you like spicy, go vindaloo! if not, I recommend the saag paneer) and they're on Fort Washington and 187th.

Ohhh, also! The New Leaf Cafe located in Fort Tryon Park, just south of the Cloisters! Their brunches are divine. Not cheap, but not ridiculously overpriced, either.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've both eaten in Kismat and ordered takeout. The takeout portions are larger, I think, than the eat-in portions. (Years ago Kismat was down the steps, on Broadway - a very plain restaurant, but the same place. Smart move to come up the hill.)

I'll try the brunch at New Leaf when downtown friends come uptown.

What about the ethnic restaurants on Broadway - even on Dyckman?

I haven't been able to eat out/order in except for sushi, or the past few years.

Kismet has already been mentioned.
Sushi YuII on 181 bet. Broadway and Cabrini is awesome. The suhsi is good. The hot Japanese dishes are way more expensive.
On St. Nicholas, between 189th and 181, there are soo many good places to get some Latin food. You can also get pizza, with things like corn for toppings at one place.
Lucky Star on Broadway bet. 181 and 182 still serves up good Chinese-Latin food.
La Caridad on the corner of Broadway and 184 is good. My friends from out of town always like it.
There is a new Vegetarian restaurant on 187th. No idea if it's a yummy spot, but I'm curious.
I also haven't been to Hispanloa on 181st and Cabrini, so cruious about that also.

Hispanola is tasty, a meal of just appetizers would not be a bad thing.

Ah - thanks for the tip about St. Nicholas. I haven't tried any places there - I've been sticking to Broadway. Now I'll try.

I went to Hispanola too soon - the week it opened. And the empanadas I had for lunch tasted microwaved. Sounds as if I should give them another chance.

When I lived on 171st I used to _love_ to go to Como Pizza (at least for take-out). Small place, but nice people own / work there, and the pizza is great.

Emilou's Cafe opened up again, on 181st near Cabrini. I used to go there every morning for coffee (those Moroccans know how to make a damned fine cup of joe), then it was closed for renovations for a long time. They're back up and running again, with a classy new dining room annex, and of course the coffee is still the best.

Emilou's is now my preferred coffee shop in the neighborhood. Tasty baklavah & a friendly staff.
The Vegetarian spot on 187th is Next Door (formery Healthy Habits, name changed to indicate they do more than just "healthy" food). The food is often "healthy" (organic & free-range meat, pasta, & sushi selections), & quite tasty, worth stopping by for dinner or weekend brunch (fresh apple juice last time I was there, but that was a while ago).
The Archway, in the basement of Hudson View Gardens (close to 183rd on Pinehurst) is a nice casual alternative. It's rarely crowded in my experience, quiet, & they serve nice (not HUGE) portions. Also, the whole menu is under $20, when I don't feel like cooking & don't want to spend much, I end up there or Malecon.
Malecon is on Broadway & 175, it's open 24 hours, & it's pretty cheap. Speaking some spanish will help if you choose to visit, not all of the staff are native or fluent english speakers.

I had my first emilou's lunch (post-renovation) yesterday - and find it a whole lot nicer than the old not-air-conditioned version. The lemon chicken costs more, but the portion is larger and it's really tasty. Watch the prices on your bill, though - the waitress was new and overcharged for coffee and charged for a refill (which she was told by the boss is a no-no).

Anyone eaten at the place on Henshaw just off the w. side highway off rsd? (I can't remember the name, but I just saw it written up.)

Anything worth eating at La Marina (formerly Tubby Hook)? I had a beer there one afternoon, and the entrees looked expensive.

Hey, this topic is right up my alley. A good source for finding good restaurants is chowhound.com. They just revamped their website to make it easier to find discussions about the types of food you want. Also, my site uptownflavor.com has restaurant suggestions but we don't get up to Washington Heights very often to eat.

New(ish) place called Plum Pomidor on 168th next door to Coogan's. Very nice wine list!

Plum Pomidor is horrible. You better pick like 5 entrees because I guarantee they won't have the first four.

Archway is closed again...I ate breakfast at Hilltop recently - desperate for a change from Angela's - and it wasn't bad. Loud, though.

What about the places on Dyckman west of b'way?

El Malecon - 175th & Broadway. Portions are huge, prices are reasonable. Always crowded.

NY Times listed some places recently

Great- thanks! I love Piper's Kilt - friendly, good food & good prices...I've only gone during the day or later afternoon - a family place at those hours. I have a feeling it might be noisy at night...
