About St Leonards Warrior Square

A group for past or present residents, visitors and friends of Warrior Square in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex. Contemporary or historical photos of the Square are very welcome, though please not of the railway station bearing the same name!

Warrior Square Gardens was opened as a subscription garden in 1852 and the houses completed in 1864. The Borough Council purchased a strip of land at the southernmost tip to erect a statue of Queen Victoria in 1902. The statue has suffered various humiliations including being machine gunned during the war (the statue still has a hole in her knee cap) and her head has been a regular place for traffic cones to be used as hats! All but the uppermost rose garden was acquired by the Council in 1920; the upper garden being donated to the Council in 1930.
