About War Correspondent

One of the correspondents featured in the exhibition is Clare Hollingworth, now living in Hong Kong, marks her hundredth birthday this month. Hollingworth was the first correspondent to report on the German invasion of Poland in 1939 – the start of the Second World War. Hollingworth had been working for the Daily Telegraph for just a few days when she was posted to the Polish-German border. Keen to find out what the situation was, she drove into Germany and saw large numbers of German tanks and troops massing ready for the attack. Claire Hollingworth witnessed the invasion of Poland by being in the right place at the right time, so her section in the exhibition focuses on opportunism.

In conjunction with War Correspondent: reporting under fire since 1914 at IWM North, we'd like you to submit your photographs that capture the unexpected as Clare Hollingworth did in 1939.

Our favourites will be shown on the IWM website and the overall best entry, as judged by a representative from our Media Partners Reuters, will receive a signed copy* of the War Correspondent book written by Jean Hood. Two runners up will each receive an exclusive War Correspondent t-shirt.

*signed by Michael Nicolson, Kate Adie and Jean Hood

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Being a war correspondent is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It is also seen as one of the most exciting. This exhibition looks in-depth at some of the century’s most celebrated war correspondents, revealing dramatic true stories, the pressures they have faced and the changing nature of war reporting from 1914 to the present day.

Entry is free to this major, must-see exhibition, which displays many remarkable items for the first time. See the bullet that deflected into Kate Adie’s leg in Lebanon, a burqa worn by John Simpson to secretly enter Afghanistan in 2001, the typewriter Michael Nicholson used to write his reports from Vietnam and one of Martin Bell’s trademark white suits, which became familiar to viewers during his reports from the Bosnian War.

This exhibition and accompanying book feature giants of war reporting in recent times. Alongside Simpson, Adie, Nicholson and Bell are Rageh Omaar, Jeremy Bowen and the late Brian Hanrahan. The life and work of Second World War reporters Clare Hollingworth, Richard Dimbleby and Alan Moorehead are also explored, as well as inspirational pioneers of their trade from earlier conflicts like Philip Gibbs and Martha Gellhorn.

The display continues until Sunday 2 January 2012.
