Hi, I am a Ladybird fan and have most of the books he illustrated. I will try to post some images from The Party, Going to School and Shopping with Mother, which have the best illustrations of children at the time. The best source of further information is www.theweeweb.co.uk a great site which has an interview with Wingfield before he died. Good luck!

@larkingabout,
I am lucky to have managed to obtain copies of both, 'The Party' which is what brought my attention to Harry's wonderful work and 'Going to school' which I consider another of his treasures. I have not yet seen any contents of 'Shopping with Mother,' - it seems like quite good source for examples of his work.
Thanks for the reference to the Weeweb which I have already had a look at as well as the interview with Harry. Just as well he was interviewd when he was or little might have been known about the man.
There was a court case between Harry's family and Ladybird over copyright issues which the family won. I wonder how much of his work they managed to save?
Surely Harry was an underestimated and undervalued artist, I wonder if any of his originals will ever see the light of day?
ps thanks for the tip about SimmyB I'll take a look.

The other book you might know by Wingfield is Helping at Home. If there are no images of this I can post some, I have some page scans, it's a beauty! Do you have it?

Thanks for the offer, I don't have 'Helping at home' yet so would appreciate seeing some of the pages to see whether it's worth getting.

Ok, I have posted some pages from Helping at Home, and also Learning With Mother, which Harry Wingfield illustrated in 1970 and has some great fashions of the time!

I don't have any scans of this book but it has Peter and Jane in various scenarios - playing in their garden, with their dog, shopping, playing shops, decorating a Christmas tree. One page has Mum and Dad wrapping their gifts, and then on the last page it is Christmas Day. There are two editions of this book, the later has the same scenes but with updated hairstyles and fashions (and, amusingly, Dad is actually helping Mum wrap the gift rather than just watching!). It's a great book, really nice Peter and Jane illustrations and some great pictures of toys.

Thanks Anastasia, didn't know you were a Ladybird fan too! ;-)
abriwin, one of the best ways to identify an edition is to ask what the price is on the back of the book. Earlier Ladybirds were either in pre-decimal currency or around 15p. Later they were 24p-50p, eg the later version of Look at This that I have is 40p. The one Anastasia has posted is the earlier version - in these editions Jane is usually wearing the yellow dress or a yellow cardigan. I'll try to post the same pics from the later verion so you can see the diff! Also see www.theweeweb.co.uk/ladybird/spotting_firsts.php for more detailed info on editions.

I didn't realise I had so many Ladybird books until I started looking through them this evening for illustrations by Wingfield!
Anyway, I have 'Air, Wind and Flight'; '4a Things We Do'; 'The Lord's Prayer' and 'Levers, Pulleys and Engines'. I also have an interesting article from an old magazine about the books which I will try and find. It mentions some of the illustrators.
