About Vintage American Standard (1929-1994)
Sixty-five years of American Standard, from 1929 to 1994.
American Standard was initially founded in 1929 when two publicly-traded companies (both of which had went public in 1899) known as the American Radiator Corporation (the result of an 1891 merger between Michigan Radiator, Detroit Radiator and Pierce Steam Heating) and the Standard Sanitary Mfg. Co. (originally founded 1875), joined forces, initially trading under the mouth-cramming name of American Radiator & Standard Sanitary Corporation, although the two companies continued to use their separate identities for their two product lines (ex.: "Standard" for plumbing fixtures/fittings) until sometime in the early 1960s. Since about 1968, all plumbing and heating products were branded as "American Standard."
After the end of World War II, people began referring to the company shorthand as "American-Standard," although the company still traded under the mouth-cramming version of their name until late 1967. After that, they officially traded as American Standard Incorporated (dropping the hyphen).
