The owners of the Janion have applied for a demolition permit.
The owner's maintenance person told me they want to put in a parking lot as they feel the major downtown crisis is lack of parking.
He said the building has no historical significance and is not worth saving.
My suggestion, if they insist on tearing it down, of a park instead of a parking lot was met with a long diatribe about the street people and their inadequacies... (He ran away from home at a young age, sustained a back injury and feels that if he can keep off the street without the help of others, the homeless should too.

1614 Store Street (Janion Building, 1891)
Significance: The building, although derelict, retains much of its original design features including a grand central staircase.
Problem: The building has lain vacant for many years and requires substantial upgrading for any public use. Recently advertised as `for lease', the Society is concerned that any development be in character with the building's design and history, and remains concerned that the cost of upgrades may lead to proposals for demolition as an economic expedient.

Trixie Kramer (Clara Beatrice Kramer) is the owner. She also owns Northern Junk on the other side of Johnson, Morley's Soda Factory in an alley between Johnson and Yates (also marked for demolition), The Spencer road trailer park (marked for new construction and moving residents), and the piece of land where the new bear mountain interchange meets the highway. There have been rumours that the developer Les Bjola has become involved with her empire since all the sudden interest in her properties.
