Allan: Excellent video! Very well done. Obviously, your Gold Coast Video Producer is experienced. The one thing I noticed that I struggle with too is the wobbly stabilizer. In the first interior scene as the camera man is walking into the living room facing towards the kitchen, note that the camera pans ever so slightly left and right. I get this too and I've spoken with the creator of the Blackbird stabilizer and he said that he is aware of this issue and is working on a solution.

Can you tell us a bit about your grading? What specifically did you do in grading? And lighting. Did you use any extra lights? How about reflectors for the shots of the realtor? Mics?

Very nice work! Cheers.

What we need to remember here is real estate video is very low budget and you get what you pay for, bumps and all - But we do try our very best to give the best. Nice work Allen!

Great job!

I think the key issue here is exactly what Paul mentions - so many photographers and videographers obsess over details - technical details - that NOBODY (except other photographers and videographers) would ever notice or care about!

If you're going to get into real estate videography - and intend to make a living from it - there is absolutely only ONE thing that matters - PRICE.

If your price isn't within the threshold of AVERAGE realtors with AVERAGE properties, you will be doing this as a hobby - not as a profession. That means that you can't spend 8 hours on a video. That means you can't obsess about little details. That means you can't be hauling around massive equipment and spending hours setting it up... It means you have to travel lean and mean, get in, get out, edit it, transcode it, upload it and get paid.... all within a day or so.

Depending on your particular market and the price of average real estate, you're looking at a few hundred dollars for a video. Don't think it's just for the luxury market, and don't think that just because a home is on the market for $3M that they are WILLING or ABLE to pay $1000 for a video - most will NOT. I have shot over $100M worth of properties this year - and trust me when I tell you that for most, $500 is a stretch for their marketing budget - especially when these properties aren't exactly flying off the shelf.....

I do about 30 real estate videos (and photos) per month.... and trust me when I tell you I don't spend 8 hours on a video! You CAN'T. Especially when you're shooting 1-3+ per day PLUS have to have everything complete TOMORROW because it's going on the MLS live and they want all assets ready to go when it's launched. That's 24 hours with an edited video, uploaded to 12 video sites, on a custom created web page, plus processing of still photos, and creation of a virtual tour. You can't take 3 days to edit your video - I promise turn around with 24 hours.... sometimes 48 hours when I get crazy busy - but no longer than that, or I'll be out of business.

And THAT is the operative word: BUSINESS.

If you want to make a business out of this, you need to work lean, mean and FAST. You need to price yourself competitively for whatever your particular market will bear (I charge $200 set to music; $300 narrated for under 5000 sq ft - an additional $100 for over 5,000 sq ft. Still photos are an additional $149).

Spend your time figuring out how to cut corners to get a product out FAST and CHEAP. It needs to be good ENOUGH - not perfect. If you obsess over perfection, you'll be pursuing a hobby, not a profitable business.

If you can work fast, cut the corners that don't matter to anyone but you, and have a good and fast workflow, this is a great business! I work every single day doing real estate video.

Is it just me, or does it look jerky?

I had issues with download on both vids. Video was jerky, and kept stopping as it played faster than it downloaded. Video in previous post loaded fine a minute ago....fwiw. What I saw made me want to see more! Great marketing in a sense!

Worked fine for me - after is loaded. But . . . audio. Using a D5II, how did you get the nice audio? I see the lav, what connections did you use. I'm toying with selling my 40D and FX1 for a 5DII. But I have questions. Can you get great audio? And which lens did they use? There was some great exposure with many windows looking really good. I'm impressed. Thanks

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Just to answer some of your questions.

Video 1 - No grading added the footage is just straight out of the camera, no reflectors used the exposure levels adjusted using manual settings. Regards audio, Sony URX-P1 radio lapel mics used with the diversity tuner plugging into the 5DII audio mini jack input.

Video 2 - Grading used is fast color corrector , edited stock footage collected over a period of time.

Would recommend as time permits to build up stock video footage for different occasions when you may need it.

Cheers

Allan: that's a great idea--to build up stock footage!

I think the quality you're exhibiting is great and it should be. I have some competition in my area that pumps out crap and I'm willing to spend some more time to create quality, so I'm glad that I can learn from experience people like yourself.

If you don't mind, would you please post your workflow?

Hey Allan--
Could you post that video here on flickr? I know it will cut off, but then just offer the link to the full video below it. I just want people to start contributing on this forum.
Thanks.
