Shophouses (Terraces) with Arcades, or sometimes Bungalows surrounded by Verandahs are believed to be introduced to Southeast Asia by English merchants since the mid 19th Century. No matter the verandahs are set up for providing sunshade, rain shelter, veneration for fresh air, or any other purpose. It can be found almost everywhere in the world, Australia, Switzerland, West USA, Africa, Japan and of course Southeast Asia.

It was the product of the first wave of architectural globalisation, following the step of Imperialism (in Southeast Asia), or simply to adopt the climate (worldwide). Now, they are sealed in time, hiding somewhere near you. Architecture detectives of all lands, unite! You have something interesting waiting to be found.

說騎樓是福爾摩莎各大島獨特的鄉鎮風景應不為過；但事實上，騎樓這種遮陽避雨的建築構造其實世界各地都可以找到。郭肇立老師說連瑞士這種高緯度高海拔的國家都可找到騎樓，應是為了避雪並讓室內外間多一個中介空間而設置的。在東南亞，經過英國殖民的香港、新加坡與馬來西亞都可在華人街或印度人街區找到騎樓；在西歐，就我們所去過的英國、荷蘭也可以看到一些建築物設置騎樓。
