Hi All

Here is an outing I posted for the Vancouver Photography Meetup Group. I would like to extend an invitation to Vandigicam members as well. The Meetup groups contributes $1 towards the site costs, this would be voluntary for Vandigcamer's.

What: Brackendale Bald Eagles Trip - December 2007

When: Sunday, December 9, 8:30 AM

Event fee: CAD 1.00 to help with Group costs

Event Description: Hi All

Just got back from Brackendale and the salmon are starting to run. I saw about two hundred eagles yesterday November 23rd. Not only eagles feasting but seals as well.

There are at least three additional sites that eagles can be found besides going to the dyke.

We'll meet at the Eagle Viewing Dyke across from the Easter Seal Camp between Squamish and Brackendale at 8:30 am. Why so early early? Because that is the best time to catch eagles eating. Remember that the sea to sky is under major construction it will take a minimum of an hour to hour and a half to get to Squamish. Wet weather gear is suggested.

Bring your telephoto lenses -- but there will be some extra telephoto toys to share: Olivon Optics has graciously donated spotting scopes with universal digital point and shoot camera mounts for anyone who wants to try. I also have a Nikon, Olympus and Pentax SLR/DSLR mount.

Carpooling
================
As before, if you need a ride, make direct contact with those fine folks offering seats in their vehicles... if you can take passengers, please note current situation in your RSVP notes including general pickup locale. Don't be shy... if you need a ride, contact someone offering a ride!

How to get there
================
Due to construction allow yourself over an absolute minimum of an hour from downtown Vancouver. Here are the details, heading north on Hwy 99 towards Whistler:

1. Go past the McDonald's Restaurant at Squamish, and continue north along Highway 99 towards Whistler.
2. Go past the 1st stop light, and continue on to the 2nd stop light on the highway. The cross road should be Garibaldi Way.
3. Take a left at this intersection.
4. Go for about a block and you will come to a "T" intersection.
5. Go right on Government Road, and follow the road for about 1/4 mile.
6. You will see an Easter Seal Camp on your right.
7. Look left, and you should see the dyke and Eagle viewing shelter and a whole pile of people with cameras.

Meeting Place
================
Again, we're meeting at 8:30am at the Eagle Viewing Dyke across from the Easter Seal Camp. The viewing area is along a strip about a block long and if you're late, you'll see everyone with cameras poised.

Après-shoot Lunch
=================

The lunch stop will be at the Howe Sound BrewPub ( www.howesound.com/brewpub.php ) in Squamish so please factor this into your plans with carpooling buddies. Pub pricing -- you know the drill (about $20 for lunch with a beer).

Jim,

Are you going to talk to the scope people again this year?

Marvin, I was at Brackendale today. There are about 10 eagles there. Here are three of them:

Brackendale Portrait

I'd love to come out again and this time go to one of those alternative places you mentioned.

BTW, the eagles outnumbered the photographers today. Barely.

Other species: Heron, ducks, cormorants, seagulls, and even a harbour seal.

I will talk to Jean an see what new toys she has.

There were certainly lots early in the morning, I could count more than thirty from where I was standing at any time on the dyke. And they were constantly coming and going. I saw less at the other two spots. But overeall I was around for four or five hours.

Nice shot Keith. 300mm or more?

Marvin, nice shot yourself.

400mm + 2x teleconverter for mine. That shot is slightly cropped.

I saw dudes with 600mm primes there yesterday. Sheesh. I think we were all getting the same shots. I brought a friend and he was amazed at the "eagles per square kilometre" rating but after an hour we had shot the same shots.

For that reason I would love to come if we take a side trip to one of those other places. I was in the art gallery at Britannia and the owner there described this complicated way to get to the creek which he said had tons more. I glossed over his crazy instructions but I would like to find it.

I'm liking the idea a lot, as I missed last year's trip. Depends on upcoming work though. Hope to make the time.

Hi All

Pete had a chance to drop out to Brackendale today. The parking is back to normal which is a good thing. It should crisp and cool so dress warmly, bring a thermos of hot drinks. Overcast sky which means even lighting but you will definitely need a tripod. I am bringing some.

See you there.

Hey Keith

We have a new spot to add to the list, I pried it out of the group that came in when you left. One said it was much better than the dyke.

Next time:
- extra socks
- mittens instead of gloves
- don't have that latte the night before (I got no sleep)

I had plenty of shots to work on this week though.
