Oooh! Love the idea as well, can you please add my name to the (waiting) list? I hope there won't be too many and a short number of spaces available. Thanks Judy for offering :-)

Wonderful ! I'm delighted to see this sort of reaction to this idea. I'm awaiting word from Aquarium staff on available dates/times, whether it will be free (most likely) and which marine science centre staff can take us around, etc.
If you haven't been to the Aquarium lately, you may be delightfully surprised at the extensive renovations underway. This is a top-class marine facility and research centre ... the changes being made are long overdue and will make viewing and working there much better.
Stay tuned ... I don't now that we're limited to 10 for sure, so if there's others who are interested, sign up !

Hey guys. This is one I'd really like to do, so up front I'll let you know that I'm going to be out of town from the 23rd-ish to the 28th-ish (details are pending, but that would be the longest I'd be away).

...and so has *kaishin* :-) Not that it won't stop me from taking the same shot... perhaps we should get the whole group lined up in front of the belugas like that, arms all over the glass. It could make for a great parody.
Incidently - give me enough notice and I'll try and wrangle an afternoon off work too :)

I should hear about timing/other details soon. The Aquarium just opened a major new piece of the facility this week, and staff were consumed by that !
It appears that a weekend would work best, probably a Sunday AM.
I'm creating a group list. Probably best to cap it at 25 people, though surely we can create a second group in few months - Spring ?
TO JOIN THE GROUP: Pls send an email with your full name and phone # to this address: jb0777@telus.net.
Thankx!

Update: Nov 8/2006 9am
approx. tour time: Sunday AM actual date: TBA
The list has now been capped off at 25 people. For those still wanting to sign up, you are welcome to be added to the wait list and for a possible future tour in spring.
Everyone in the first 25 please make sure you email Judy B at jb0777@telus.net with your Full Name and Phone Number so that she can put her list together.
Once we have a confirmed date and confirmation of who out of the 25 can make it, perhaps a few of those might be able to take the places of those who cannot make it in the 25. I will continue the list, as Judy suggested there might be a possibility of another tour for other folks to participate in this lovely opportunity.
Thanks-
Kai

I await the Aquarium's next response. They originally wanted to run this on a weekday. I told them it was much better for our group that it be a weekend, esp a Sunday. They're now working on when that can happen.
I know it's unlikely to be before the Nov 25/26th weekend. That's the update for now.

UPDATE: I was at the official launch of the new Aquarium wing last night. WOW, it's looking great - so visually rich and with excellent access to animals!
I'm happy to say that all is in place for Vandigicammers to enjoy a photo tour/session there - including behind-the-scenes access. Thankx for maintaining the above list, Kaishin. I'm told that ideal group size should be under 20, and that Aquarium staff is happy to schedule a second, or even third, session. Hooray !
In return, I propose that Vandigicammers offer the Aquarium the option of using any really great shots from our tour(s) in their marcom materials at no cost - photographer name attributed, of course. (If our groups says 'no', we still get the tour. It's my idea, and a win-win .... good for exposure and of course, the Aquarium.)
Please do this: Using my email ( jb0777@telus.net ), telling me:
1. are you ok with the idea of offering up images, as above?
2. show your date preferences - see my example below.
(Know that Saturdays may be livelier/more interesting, cuz there'll be kids interacting with the COOLEST displays ever.)
3. show your ideal start time for the tour
---------------------------------------------
Photo offer option ?
DATES - MY PREFERENCES
Sat Dec 2nd - 1
Sun Dec 3rd - 3
Sat Dec 9th - 2
Sat Jan 13th - 4
Start time - 10:30 AM ideal, but OK with 1PM/early afternoon
-----------------------------------------
Please let me know soonest, and we'll nail down 2 dates to accommodate our whole group.
PS: Some have asked by email if you can bring friends/partners that aren't shooting photos. It think we should stay focussed on the picture-taking aspect of this tour. The Aquarium will happily host another tour for a less structured group.

We have a date! (I've sent this to those who previously emailed me, I'm posting here for a general update.)
The Vandigicammers have spoken, and the word for preferred tour timing is ..... Saturday December 9th AM. I've worked through arrangements with the Aquarium, we now have a tour for maximum 15.
If Dec 9th doesn't work for you, the Aquarium will tour another group in mid January. (Bonus - if you must defer to January, know that they'll give us pre-opening hours access (say, 8:30AM), meaning no people but our group and Aquarium staff.
This will be a visually-rich tour. I've secured agreement to give us an interesting mix of up-front touring, including the superb new Aquaquest facility, and behind-the-scenes access. The latter will take place in smaller groups (5 or so) because the lab-type spaces are quite cramped, so while one smaller group goes there, others can visit another part of the aquarium and rendezvous back for their turn. Bonus - at 11:30AM a Scuba Claus will dive into the huge Strait of Georgia tank exhibit, very cool to see.
What you need to do to join the Dec 9th tour?
1. Pls confirm by email that you can come that day - I'll confirm back asap if you made the December list. In fairness, I'll collect names first from those who have already emailed me on this.
2. If yes, present yourself at the Aquarium entrance (by the killer whale sculpture) by 10AM sharp on Sat Dec 9th. I'll meet you there. (Latest photo below, no I won't wear the crown). Directions for all means of travel are here: www.vanaqua.org/visit_us/getting_here.html
3. Footwear must have non-slid soles, as we'll be walking on ramps and in wet labs. We'll be switching between indoors and outdoors.
If there's interest, we can have lunch afterwards at the Aquarium or elsewhere. Looking forward to it !!

Dec 3 update: Dec 9th tour is full !
Sadly, we've hit the 15-person limit already for that date. (You've already heard by email whether you're on the list.)
I'm delighted there's been so much keen interest in the Dec 9th tour !
I'm collecting name for the mid-January tour now, so keep emailing me (jb0777 at telus dot net). If there's enough demand, we'll even do a 3rd tour.

Because some of the shots taken in the December (and subsequent) Aquarium tours are likely to stray outside Vandigicam's guidelines, I've created a new pool -- Vancouver Aquarium.

Why not post shots you already have from the Aquarium, along with new ones you create on December 9th ?

Great time and good to meet and talk with some new vandigicammers. Judy, you did a great job and we all appreciated your efforts. After listening to the conversations at lunch, I realize just how much about cameras and photography I don't know and have yet to learn. And yes, jellyfishwalk was the agreed upon tag for today's outing, as I recall.

Oh ish*t! Maybe it was jellyfishswim. Doh!
After a quick tag search, there are more people with jellyfishswim than with the walk version, so I'd say the swims have it.
Please tag your vandigicam photos from the aquarium as: jellyfishswim.
Sorry for the confustion and thanks to Arezu for noticing this. :P
