Reifel is cool (my shots from there) and I second the recommendation. Apparently tens of thousands of snow geese should start arriving in October for their winter migration.

I love going to Reifel specifically for the waterfowl. You'll get all kinds of waterfowl you don't usually see that close anywhere else. Wood ducks are common, as are Widgeons, Pintails, shovellers, grebes, coots, goldeneyes, buffleheads, mergansers, and plenty of others. Raptors are common too - falcons, hawks, and owls. There are also the resident Sandhill cranes, which are tame enough that if you get too close, they let you know it (by jumping at you and flapping their wings, and also pecking the daylights out of you.)
There's plenty of stuff that doesn't require a really long lens!
Love that place.

I want to go to this place, but we would need people to drive there. Anyone willing to drive a group of snap happy people?

Hey folks. I've kind of been a member and watching for months now, but haven't contributed to conversation as of yet. Now I am contributing. I'd love to head out to the bird sanctuary again. Last time I went I didn't get to spend much time there (maybe ten minutes at most...) and I wanted to go back. Also, I have a car that seats driver +4.

I can do driver + 3; I'd suggest this Saturday, but the long range forecast is currently for rain. We can plan for that and see how the weather goes, or maybe next weekend (the 23rd)?

I've been there before and it's cool, though I wasn't there when there were a lot of birds. Maybe someone can confirm if that is the optimal time.

I shoot alot and often at Reifel ... see my bird group: www.flickr.com/photos/judyb/sets/1241596/
The suggested Sept. 23rd time would be a good one, as many birds are passing through this area's flyway. I have a large comfy Volvo sedan that can seat 5 friendly people (including driver). Can the organizer let me know details ?

This sounds like a very fun trip, and I'd love to hitch a ride with somebody who would be driving up there- although next weekend would probably suit me a bit better too.
(It might also give me some time to beg a coworker to borrow one his of insanely long zoom lenses too!)

What's wrong with birds?
I'm busy this weekend and I think my parents are in town the weekend of the 23rd. But they like birds and photography, so they may be up for being temporary vandigicammers. If that's the case I (or they) can drive and there'd be room for 2 or 3 more.

Unfortunately the 23rd is out for me as I am at a birthday party. That kind of sucks as I am eager to test out my new zoom on pretty birds. So far, just Jericho ducks.

Let's meet in the parking lot between 11:30 and 11:45 on Saturday September 23rd (weather depending). I'm leaving it up to everyone to arrange a ride for themselves, but so far this shouldn't be a problem since we have more drivers than passengers.
I'll be in Icathing's car, along with yarnageddon and slightly-less-random. Jenny Lee Silver, Judy_B, and steena will all be driving and they have plenty of seats on offer. Thomas Milne, may I suggest you contact one of them to arrange a ride?

I'd love to come, but there are a couple of things:
1. How long will the outing be for? I have plans that needs me back in downtown at 5pm. Oh and what parking lot is everyone meeting at?
2. Provided that I can find someone to borrow their zoom lens, but it would be fun just to see the place regardless of that.

Yay! I'd like to go too. I hereby demand Waxy come along so that I might steal borrow his 70-200 f2.8L lens.
Of course, I have houseguests that weekend so ditching them might not be the most polite thing to do.....

I think getting downtown by 5pm won't be a problem - 2-3 hours there is the perfect amount. There's just one parking lot.
I wouldn't sweat the zoom lens - I was there with my 17-85 and got several shots I was happy with. At the very least, there are the ducks and the sandhill cranes, which are used to people and will let you get fairly close (although I wouldn't get too close to the cranes).

Thanks icathing! The comments about the cranes made me chuckle... I've seen what swans can do... I've been beaked by one in Stanley park as a kid and was feeding them too close, while the other went after my little sister since she was their height.

Ha Matt! I would be more than happy to trade "Sherman" -- just for the day though. It looks like I can make it that day/time.
I need a ride, unless folks want to help me split the cost of the car share. Then I am happy to provide some wheels.

Hey Matt . . . Any chance for a trade? You can borrow my 70-200 but I would like to use your medium format camera? If so, what type of film options do I have and where do you get yours processed?
Thank you both!

Thanks again Judy, thats great!
By the way I should be able to bring a spare Nikon telephoto (70-300) along with my 50-200 if anyone would like to borrow one- drop me a line otherwise I'll leave it with Jo. Neither are very fast (5.6 for both I think) but they don't half zoom in a way...

Weather is looking fantastic for tomorrow, looking forward to seeing you all there!
In case anyone didn't know, there is a small entrance fee of $4 for the sanctuary; they take credit cards but not debit. They also sell small bags of seed which are good if you like being surrounded by packs of ravenous birds. Just give us sane people warning so we can take pictures.

For those inclined to, I'd recommend stopping off at Westham Island Estate Winery on the way to/from Reifel. They have an excellent assortment of table and dessert wines, all made from fruit, most of which is grown on the island. They're at 2170 Westham Island Rd (well marked).
Tastings are free and you can try up to three. Prices for a full bottle are very reasonable, around $15 or so. $20 or so for the dessert wines.

Well it was a nice day today, and I got a few nice photos. I'll post a few more when I get my film developed, too.
As for a tag for the photos, I'm going with "vandigicam_reifel" unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Although we heard the eerie loud call of the Sandhill cranes, and saw them fly overhead, they didn't actually present themselves. So... here's how they looked during a previous winter visit to Reifel ... remember, they're almost 4-feet tall:

I very much enjoyed the photowalk -- my first with vandigicam! -- and chatting with a few of you in the pub afterwards.
Unfortunately I don't have any photos to show because (I was shooting slide film) London Drugs tells me when they developed the film it was all blank. :-(
As an aside, I'm debating whether to be angry at London Drugs or not... The film had expired a year ago (I found it and a few more rolls at the back of the fridge) but it had been in the fridge for that year and the year before that. I'd expected a loss of quality, but... to have all 36 shots come out blank... What do you think, is that likely or did LD screw up?!

Did you ask for the negatives?

I didn't think that LD did E-6 processing, so I would suspect that they either shipped it out to someone who does or else ran it through the C-41 processing machines. You still should have gotten results, though (funky, cross-processed results).
They definitely should have given you the negatives back so you could see if there was anything. Unless someone (you or they) accidentally exposed the film, there should be *something* (edge numbers for example) on there.
My advice would be not to use LD for slide film as they don't do it in house. Take it to one of the many pro labs that do E6 processing on site (Gamma Pro, The Lab, ABC Photo, G. King, etc.).

Yeah, LD sucks for B&W and Xpro, they send it away and it takes weeks. Those labs FGJ mentions are good but you can also take it to First Foto on Broadway and they'll do a great job in 30mins and probably be cheaper than the pro labs. I'm sure you can find other 30min shops that will do xpro. In fact I did some xpro at Shoppers Drug Mart.

London Drugs is horrible and I'll never go back there. They destroyed a roll of film by rolling it up in a tight spiral and shoving it into a film canister while it was still drying. Let's not even get into cutting the frames,
If you didn't get the negatives back (even purportedly blank) then there's not much you can do now. Film that's 1 year expired is practically still brand new!

I went and picked up my negatives yesterday, they were entirely black. The person developing them wrote the comment on the envelope "film blank". On the possibility that the fault was mine, I'm going to play around with my camera to see the film is advancing etc. If I can't find a problem with my camera, then I won't go back to that LD.
