Filter system recommendations?

view profile

twin.reflex says:

Does anyone have any recommendations/experience for/with a filter system that is both cheap and reliable. I'm looking to buy some ND filters for long exposures during the day but don't want to spend a lot on a Lee system and I hear cokin filters aren't great when it comes to picture quality. Are there any alternatives?

If you don't mind waiting around until May, there's a camera show outside Toronto where you can get tons of cheap filters and cokin sets for next to nothing.

Really?? What where when! Details please :)

On a side note, I just purchased a multicoated c-pol from hong kong online that was super great value for the money.

maxsaver.net/

(I've ordered from both of the above, and have been happy. The interweb reports genuine filters and not knockoffs)

However, some argue that polarizers are the only filters you really need nowadays, because you can imitate everything else with digital post processing....

They haven't announced the dates for 2012 yet, but when they do we usually fill up a few cars of photo club people and drive there. It's a fun day.

I'll put in another "good experiences" with maxsaver. Bought a few hoya filters from them.

Thanks for the info guys!

True but ND filters are hard to replicate in post when it comes to ~30 second exposure taken during the day.

I'll be sure to check it out!

To be more specific, I'm looking for something more like a filter holder and square filters so I don't have to buy different filter sizes for different lenses. Any recommendations on what ND strength would work best with long exposures for waterfalls, landscapes (skies) and such, from experience?

I found a page that goes through it all if any one else is looking into buying ND filters.

I'm a huge fan of 10-stop ND filters like the Lee "Big Stopper". They are, however, expensive.

I have been using the DIY method rather successfully as of late. Use a welding shield, less than $10 at Home Depot. The only issue is that you have to WB compensate after tyne fact. Just shoot a grey card or a reference point first and you can adjust colour temp in post. Most welding shields will leave a very green colour cast, but replicate approximately 10-stops of killed light.

Thanks for the idea Sharkie, I remember coming across that little DIY awhile back but totally forgot about it. Hopefully a Cokin P filter holder will do the job.

I'd assume it would be easier to set a custom WB in camera though.
