About US Route 169

US Route 169. Get yours at bighugelabs.com/flickr
This group is for posting photos of places and scenes along U.S. Route 169 as it winds its way up from Oklahoma through Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and ends up in northeastern Minnesota.

Guidelines for Posting
1) Photos should generally be within a couple of blocks of the route. Scenery and buildings are welcome as long as they're within a couple of blocks of the route. Pictures of "Main St." in small towns are also acceptable. Chances are good that the original route of the highway went down the main drag through town, even though it might completely bypass that town now.

2) Both current and historical photos are welcome. Old postcards of places along the route are most welcome.

3) Photos from sections of the original highway that have been changed to other road names or are "Old 169" or "Business 169" are acceptable.

4) Water towers from the towns along the route are acceptable.

5) Geotagged photos (added to your flickr map) are preferred so those of us who are so inclined can find the place and go there.

6) No porn or nudie pictures or any photos that would be considered offensive! This is a "Safe" group. Stuff that fits into this category will be removed.

About U.S. Route 169
U.S. Route 169 currently runs for 966 miles (1,555 km) from the city Tulsa, Oklahoma at U.S. Route 64 to Virginia, Minnesota. Originally U.S. 169 continued north out of Virginia, and followed the route up to the Canadian border at International Falls that was taken over by U.S. 53 in 1934. There was also, at one time, a 50+ mile spur of the route between Virginia and Fall Lake, Minnesota that is now MN 169.

Formed in 1930, much of U.S. 169 is four-lane expressway now, though there are still significant stretches of the original two-lane road. If you like the two laners, you should keep your eyes open for "Old 169" on the map in various places.

Towns and Cities along U.S. Route 169 (south to north)

Oklahoma: Tulsa, Owasso, Collinsville, Oologah, Talala, Watova, Nowata, Delaware, Lenapah, Elliott, South Coffeyville

Kansas: Coffeyville, Liberty, Cherryvale, Morehead, Thayer, Earlton, Chanute, Humboldt, Bassett, Iola, Carlyle, Colony, Welda, Garnett, Greeley, Osawatomie, Paola, Hillsdale, Spring Hill, Ocheltree, Bonita, Olathe, Kansas City

Missouri: Kansas City, Smithville, Trimble, Grayson, Gower, Evansville, St. Joseph, Avenue City, Rochester, Union Star, King City, Stanberry, Gentry, Worth, Grant City, Irena

Iowa: Redding, Mt Ayr, Arispe, Afton, Talmage, Lorimor, Winterset, De Soto, Adel, Minburn, Gardiner, Ogden, Boxholm, Harcourt, Fort Dodge, Humboldt, Algona, Burt, Bancroft, Lakota

Minnesota: Elmore, Blue Earth, Winnebago, Amboy, Vernon Center, Garden City, Mankato, North Mankato, Kasota***, St. Peter, Le Sueur, Belle Plaine, Jordan, Shakopee, Chanhassen**, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, St. Louis Park*, Minneapolis*, Brooklyn Center*, New Hope, Crystal*, Osseo, Champlin, Anoka, Elk River, Zimmerman, Princeton, Long Siding, Pease, Milaca, Onamia, Vineland, Garrison, Nichols, Bennettville, Aitkin, Hassman, Waukenabo, Haypoint, Hill City, Grand Rapids, Bovey, Holman, Taconite, Marble, Calumet, Pengilly, Nashwauk, Keewatin, Hibbing, Chisholm, Buhl, Mountain Iron, Virginia.

The original route north of Virginia (taken over by U.S. 53 in 1934) went through Idington, Cook, Gheen Corner, Glendale, Orr, Cusson, Ash Lake, Ray, Ericsburg, International Falls (Canadian border.)

The spur northeast of Virginia, Minnesota that is now MN 169 went through Peyla, Tower, Soudan, McComber, Burntside, Ely, Winton, Fall Lake.

* Past routings of U.S. 169 through the western Twin Cities area took it along Excelsior Boulevard and Lake Street to Lyndale Ave in Minneapolis where it ran straight up along the Mississippi River to Anoka. Later, it moved west and ran concurrent with MN 100 and U.S. 52 (now Hennepin County Road 81) to Anoka until it moved west again to its current alignment, taking over the route that was formerly Hennepin County Road 18. Currently, no part of U.S. 169 goes through Minneapolis proper.

** U.S. 169 formerly went through the city of Shakopee, where it crossed the Minnesota River along with MN 101, meeting up with U.S. 212 on Flying Cloud Drive. U.S. 169/212 ran concurrently in different alignments until the late 1990's when the Shakopee bypass was built, linking U.S. 169 directly, via the new Bloomington Ferry bridge, to the current alignment that runs where old Hennepin County Road 18 once ran.

*** The original route of U.S. 169 from Mankato to St. Peter, Minnesota followed what is now MN 22 until the early 1960's when it was moved to the other side of the Minnesota River.

Details, if known, about routing changes in other states are welcome. Feel free to send me a flickr mail explaining what you know about the changes, and I will post the info here.
