About Urban Sketchers
SEE THE WORLD ONE DRAWING AT A TIME
This is a group for all sketchers out there who love to draw the cities where they live and visit, from the window of their homes, from a cafe, at a park, standing by a street corner... always on location, not from photos or memory.
Visit our site at www.urbansketchers.com.
POSTING GUIDELINES
Before sharing your drawings in the pool, make sure they meet these basic criteria:
• You did the drawing on location, not from photos or memory.
• You have written the location of the sketch in the headline or caption.
We aim to mantain the group's pool focused on location drawings from every corner of the world. We reserve the right to remove any drawings that don't fit our mission. We also encourage members to write descriptions and stories associated with each sketch.
FAQ ABOUT URBAN SKETCHERS
What is Urban Sketchers? Urban Sketchers (USk) is a network of artists around the world who draw the cities where they live and the places they travel to. We always draw on location, indoors or out, from direct observation.
From dynamic cities like London, Barcelona, New York, San Francisco, Lisbon, Singapore and Seoul, we portray everyday life — from commuters on packed rush-hour subways to coffee drinkers at a sidewalk café. Our open sketchbooks show lively streetscapes, soaring architecture and intriguing faces, all quickly rendered by the sometimes furtive scratching of pen to paper.
"Drawing a city isn't just capturing it on paper, it's really about getting to know it, to feel it, to make it your own," says Nina Johansson, a correspondent in Stockholm.
How did USk start? USk is the brainchild of Spanish-born illustrator and journalist Gabriel Campanario, a staff artist and blogger at The Seattle Times. After seeing an increasing number of people sharing their location drawings in the blogosphere, Campanario joined forces with a few of them to launch this initiative.
He started USk as a Flickr group in November 2007. A year later, he invited a small group of artists to post drawings from their cities and from their trips in a group blog.
What is the purpose of this network of artists? The gist of the network is to show the world one drawing at a time. This is the manifesto urban sketchers follow:
• We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
• Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
• Our drawings are a record of time and place.
• We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
• We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
• We support each other and draw together.
• We share our drawings online.
• We show the world, one drawing at a time.
I want to join, what do I need to do? First thing you’ll need to do is start sharing your location drawings online. Start a blog or share them on Flickr.
Next, email us your name, city and a direct link to the drawings. If you also use your Flickr account for photos or other types of images, send us a link to an specific set titled “urban sketches” or “location drawings.” Likewise, if your blog includes unrelated posts, add an “urban sketches” or “location drawings” label to those with urban sketches and send us that URL.
We will add your name to the USk Members list, which also appears on the blog’s left sidebar, and start following your work.
Members who also join USk on Flickr can share their drawings in our pool. Each week, entries from the Flickr pool are featured on the blog (Flickr Faves).
We will also email you a string of html code that you can copy and paste on your blog sidebar or Flickr profile to display the USk logo.
It's been more than a week since I emailed my information and haven't heard anything. Have you forgotten me? We've probably just fallen a bit behind. We answer all the messages we get individually and it may take us from 1 to 2 weeks to get back to you. If you don't hear anything in 2 weeks it may be that you submitted incomplete information or a bad link. Feel free to send us a new email then.
I’m already a member and share my drawings on the Flickr group, what do I need to do to become a blog correspondent? The selection of correspondents is by invitation. Correspondents are selected based on the quality of their work, style, originality, geographic location and overall skills as visual storytellers. The goal is to make the blog as enriching and diverse as possible.
We follow the Flickr group closely as we look for new correspondents.
Who are the blog correspondents? USk correspondents come from all corners of the world and have diverse backgrounds, from painting, architecture, journalism, advertising, illustration, graphic design or teaching. Some are veteran published authors, others are young illustrators. All of them share the same passion for drawing on location.
What is the difference between members and correspondents? Correspondents can publish their drawings directly to the main blog after being invited. Being a correspondent means a strong involvement in our community of sketchers, posting to the blog regularly —a minimum of once a month— and offering feedback to fellow sketchers on the blog and Flickr. Correspondents not only add individual drawings to the blog but also narrative explaining the circumstances in which the sketch was done or a particular story behind it.
