About Up To Something

Fab Collective’s first exhibition ‘Up To Something‘ is at St Luke’s, the ‘bombed out church’ at the top of Bold Street, Liverpool until 30th August.

Opening times are Thursday to Sunday, 12-4pm but we often stay later if the weather is fine. Listen for the music.

There are loads of friendly folks around in St Luke's each day the exhibition is open. Come and say hi. Bring your camera along and let the space inspire you.

St Luke's is a building very much under threat. We hope that by exhibiting in this space we can encourage people to visit the church and realise what a treasure this is. Its not safe to assume that one day someone will come along and save St Luke's. If the council-owned building continues to deteriorate, it is just as likely it will be sold off to developers and could easily suffer the same sad fate as Josephine Butler House.

'Up To Something' is an open group for anyone and everyone who visits the exhibition. We'd like to archive what happens in the space during this time. Please show your support for St Luke's and for Fab Collective by posting your images and thoughts about the exhibition and the church here. This group will remain open for submission throughout the course of the exhibition.

Thank you xxx

About Fab Collective

Fab Collective formed out of an open call on the Liverpool Flickr Group for local photographers interested in putting together an exhibition. Since January around thirty photographers have been working together to organise and fund this first exhibition. Its been six enlightening and entertaining months and now, finally, we're here.

When we were looking for a venue someone in the group suggested St Luke's. We approached the artists-in-residence Urban Strawberry Lunch and they could not have been more encouraging.

The photographs in the exhibition have all been inspired by or chosen in response to quotes about Liverpool. The title ‘Up to something’ is taken from this quote:

“You know what scousers are like, they’re always up to something. Please do not repeat that to anyone from Liverpool.” Jack Straw 1999

In response to this we would like to say that yes, we are scousers and we are up to something - something fab!

About St Luke's

The Church of St Luke, Liverpool stands on the corner of Berry Street and Leece Street. It was designed by John Foster and was consecrated on the 12th January 1831.

On May 5th 1941, during the last week of The Blitz, the church was hit by an incendiary bomb. The fire which ensued gutted the building leaving the shell now known affectionately as "the bombed-out church".

St Luke's serves as an unofficial memorial to the war.

It is listed on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register.

About Urban Strawberry Lunch

Urban Strawberry Lunch (a.k.a. USL) are legendary local musicians. They formed in the late 1980's to create and promote 'low tech' music after their instruments were destroyed in studio a fire. They make their own eco-friendly instruments which produce a unique sound. Often copied, but never bettered USL have been playing at events and festivals, and have been running educational music workshops for over 20 years.

USL love St Lukes. They have been working tirelessly to highlight the plight of the crumbling church since 2001. In 2007 they became artists-in-residence and now ensure that the building is regularly open to the public. They hold film nights, musical and arts events and this year they are kindly hosting our very first photography exhibition.
