Hi,
I am trying to re-organise my local school's Lost & found /wardrobe/cupboard (approx 6' x 3' x 1.5'). We have tried [putting labelled crates in for clothes; didn't work - uniform eventually get all mixed up again. Often parents (and kids) don't have a lot of time to find things and often get fed up and just buy new ones. These lost items, many have no names or the names have faded. henve no one claim them. (well, no woner parents don't spend too long looking through the things, they don't smell that great! yak!
anyway, I am seeking ideas on how to de-clutter this cupboard and re-organise it so that it's EASY AND QUICK for everyone to find things - a system that enable everyone to quickly labelled items when they found a lost item of clothing, hat, drink bottle, jackets, short, short sleeve shirts, longs sleeve shirts, long pants, short pants etc) . As you can see, they are MANY items and I am trying to work out a SYSTEM to somehow 'sort and labell' these which will work for everybody; this includes finding a skilled 'parent 'carpenter (through school newsletter) who can help modify the wardrobe (which has only shelves and NO hanging area).
So, your ideas on who to re-organise this clutter would be great appreciated.
IF you have photos of your school's Lost and Found area (doesn't have to be cupboards) would be great too (for stimulating ideas).
thanks all ! ;-)

Do you have a photo of the current situation that you can post somewhere? I can probably come up with some suggestions but it's hard to visualize it without seeing a photo.

Sell, give away or throw away the old stuff periodically at the end of term or the year.

someone will have to straighten it up every day or other day or so. If you expect the kids to do it, that;'s not gonna happen. Label the wardrobe shelves with whatever categories you like, for example 'scarves' 'books' 'gloves' 'clothes' or whatever. Most kids will put the items where they are supposed to go, but there will be times when they are rushing to class or just being careless as kids are prone to do. So an adult needs to come by and straighten up the lost-and-found area on a regular basis. Perhaps you can ask for a parent volunteer to do this if you don't have time.
I'd also post a clear policy for how long found items will be kept. in the school system my kids are in, they keep items for the school year, that's it. Some schools empty theirs out every month or every semester.

Clothing items seem to be your biggest problem. It might be time to invest some money in a portable closet, dividers, and some hangers. If not I'm sure there is some kind of expanding pole you could find at wall-mart to do the job inside the wardrobe.
I'd also suggest tagging each item found with a date after a month, it gets packed up in a box and stored some where else that can be got to if need be. I think most people would have stopped in before a month to find something.
For the other non-clothes items the wardrobe will work fine. I don't suggest labels as the amount of the items will fluctuate. Let the items label themselves, drink bottles with drink bottles etc...
Febreze is also a good friend to have. Get the antibacterial, since schools are breeding grounds for germs.
