Group Description

Ultimate Pro

This is a spin-off group from ULTIMATE SCORE ME - one of the most vibrant scoring groups on Flickr.

ULTIMATE Pro is a specialist group, by invitation only where the aim is no longer to score 5 photos but to COMMENT on 3 photos - providing critical appraisals on the photos submitted.

Mission
We acknowledge that, as with most endeavors, photography has a learning curve associated with it. This group’s collective goal is to further both the art and science of photography for all members.

Photos should be commented on its POSITIVE/PLUS and NEGATIVE/MINUS points. Comments should be constructive and NOT "I just don't like it" type comments. Please give advice to the other members!

This photo was considered to be an ULTIMATE pro shot!

Example comment:
This is a great photo as the lighting makes the whole photo glow. However I wouldn't have shot the scene from such a straight on angle, I would have tried getting beneath the tree and looking up, with the light source hitting the leaves underneath.

How to Comment

Commenting should focus on the following areas

Personal Interpretation

1. Lead with something good to say
Even if you don’t like to photo in any way shape or form, find something good to start of with, no matter how tiny, even if it’s something like “great effort!”.

2. Next put the main body of the comments
For example: “This shot looks out of focus. The main composition of the photograph is weak, and the background is really busy and overall very distracting”

3. Now provide a way to improve the shot:
"Next time move closer to the subject to cut out the distracting background and take second before taking the shot to consciously review what is in the background of the shot. Trying moving the main subject to a more stronger composition, e.g. rule of thirds"

4. Finish off by offering some words of encouragement:
"A good effort, you went out in the beating sun and got a decent shot... keep up the good work, try again, and I'm looking forward to watching your progress..."

Technical Interpretation

1. Technical:
Exposure? Focus? Colour? Post-processing? Depth of focus? if you say something is off or bad then you should give suggestions and procedures on how to fix it.

Even better if you can link to a resource on the internet that will help the photographer understand more about the issues

2. Composition:
is the composition pleasing? say so! tell the shooter *why* you like the composition. where was your eye drawn? how long did you stare and appreciate the photo? if the composition is off, offer help - rule of thirds, golden mean, give a link if you think they could use it, etc.

3. Emotions:
how did the photo make you *feel*? did the photograph stir any emotions inside? bring up any memories?

When Submitting a post

Remember a couple things:
1. You placed your photo out there, so be prepared for *anything* !!!
2. The person making the comments may have the best of intentions, but may not be able to put it in nice friendly words... typing on the internet doesn't convey the emotions we can when we're speaking face to face. Language can also be a barrier especially on the global internet.
3. Take all critiques, good/bad/thorough/terse, and learn from them.
4. It helps when you make a post to explain what you were trying to show or the story you were trying to convey with the image.
