About Wetlands in the UK

The UK has many types of wetland habitat, including floodplains, fens, lake systems, wet grasslands and bogs. The physical, chemical and biological processes at work in wetlands give rise to functions such as the detention of water, nutrients and carbon, which may be beneficial to humans by delivering an ecosystem service that contributes to well-being.

More than 3500 species of invertebrates, 150 species of aquatic plant, 22 species of duck and 33 species of wader have been identified living in UK wetlands, whilst all six of our native species of amphibian depend on wetlands for breeding.

This group is for photos taken at any wetlands site in the UK, and particularly for the species that depend on and thrive on those sites. It is designed to provoke thought about land use and habitat.

Whenever possible try to geo-tag/map your photo before uploading, and include the actual date it was taken.
