About Flickr Cultural Exchange

After some discussion we have a new name and a new purpose…

History

This group started as an attempt to undo the first ban on Flickr in the UAE. It contained the following appeal:

To Etisalat: We recognize that the UAE is one of the most progressive countries in the Middle East. We are sensitive to the people of the UAE and their wishes to avoid images that they do not want to see. But we do not think that the current ban will do anything positive for the UAE, so please lift the ban and find more appropriate ways to deal with the issues.

Whatever little influence we might have had in the final decision, the group proved to be enormously successful and attracted over 600 members worldwide in the first 18 hours of its existence. In discussions following the ban, we talked about our differences and our similarities. In the end, we came together despite our differences in support of lifting the ban.

Subsequently there was general agreement to transform the group into a cultural exchange.

New Purpose

This is the United Nations of Flickr. Here we exchange those things that are dear to our own cultures and common to us all. Here we learn to respect and appreciate each other and clear up our own misperceptions.

Please use the search tool before posting a new topic. Where possible, add to an existing discussion

If you are new to Flickr, you might also want to check out FlickrCentral. For more personal social discussions, see FlickrSocial. Have a question? Try FlickrHelp. Have an idea? post it to FlickrIdeas. For technical trouble please try FlickrBugs.

We hope you enjoy your experience here!

Guidelines

We do not like many rules, but in any large group some are needed:

1. Please be respectful of other cultures. You have the right to disagree, but be nice – do not insult.

2. No offensive photos please. Please keep your photos kid-friendly and Safe for Workplaces (SFW).

3. Please do not flood the pool. Post a maximum of 3 photos per day.

4. You are welcome to speak your own language. If you do, kindly supply an English translation so that everyone can understand.
