11 Aug 09 - Please feel free to post any heritage related photos taken in and around the North East of England, Tyne and Wear specifically. We'd like to see anything , not just the Heritage Open Day sites. Thank you.

About Heritage Open Days - Tyne and Wear

Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th September 2010

As part of Tyne and Wear Heritage Open Days 2010, from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th September, you can visit and take part in over 200 buildings and activities – all for free!

Heritage Open Days is organised nationally by English Heritage. It is the nation’s biggest free celebration of architecture, history and culture and has taken place annually in the UK since September 1994. It is part of European Heritage Days, a much larger collection of similar events across Europe taking place annually around the same time, which are run as a Council of Europe initiative. The event allows the public a chance to visit heritage sites free of charge, that are usually not open or that charge a fee.

In Tyne & Wear, the co-ordination of the event is led by Newcastle City Council, but also involves the Councils of Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland, with Buttress – The Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust, English Heritage, Newcastle Association of City Guides, Sunderland Heritage & Local History Forum and volunteers. However, the weekend is only made possible by the generous time and effort of all the volunteers at the participating buildings, tours and talks.

Last year’s event was a huge success. Nationally over one million people from all walks of life took advantage of the 3,500+ properties, tours and events participating during Heritage Open Days 2009 to celebrate and explore the built environment of their community or region. In Tyne and Wear there were a record 58,265 visits to the 208 properties, tours and talks that participated.

This year, building on the success of previous years, the Tyne and Wear event is bigger and better! Throughout the County over 200 buildings, tours and talks have already confirmed that they are taking part in the weekend.

Last year’s event was a huge success. So help us make this years Hertitage Open Day even better.
