The family used the banner (gonfanon) in its arms and the city adopted the banner as its arms already in the early 13th century. Even after the city was acquired by Württemberg in 1342 the arms did not change. The two arms holding the deer antler of the arms of Württemberg were granted in 1514 by Duke Ulrich. Population: ~ 85,000 - Um circa 12.000 v. Chr. wurde die Gegend um das heutige Tübingen erstmals besiedelt. Aus der Zeit um 85 n. Chr. stammen Spuren der Römer, die hier den Neckar-Limes errichteten. - Wie bei anderen "ingen-Orten" weist der Name Tübingen darauf hin, daß die Siedlung vor etwa anderthalb Tausend Jahren von den Alemannen gegründet worden ist. Schriftlich erwähnt wird der Ort allerdings erst zum Jahr 1078, als in der Zeit des Investiturstreits König Heinrich IV. nach seinem "Canossa-Gang" das Schloss Tübingen, das "castrum Alemannorum, quod Twingia vocatur", belagerte. Nach diesem Schloss nannten sich ihre Erbauer, die Grafen des Nagoldgaues, Grafen von Tübingen, die in der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts die Pfalzgrafenwürde, das Stellvertreteramt des Herzogs von Schwaben, erwarben. Unter ihnen erlebte Tübingen eine erste große Blüte. Aus dem Dorf wird eine Stadt: 1191 werden neben dem Pfarrer auch Kaufleute erwähnt, um 1204 besitzt man einen Galgen, Merkmal der hohen Gerichtsbarkeit, um 1231 endlich wird Tübingen als civitas, also als Ort mit Stadt- und Bürgerrecht, bezeichnet. Wenige Jahre später sind dann auch die Stadtmauern bezeugt. 1342 Nach Stuttgart war Tübingen gemessen an der Einwohnerzahl und der Wirtschaftskraft für Jahrhunderte die zweitgrößte Stadt des Landes, die bei der Errichtung des Herzogtums Württemberg 1495 auch zweite Residenz- und Hauptstadt wurde. Ihre politische Rolle zeigte sich deutlich, als die Tübinger städtische "Ehrbarkeit" 1514 dem Herzog Ulrich von Württemberg im Zusammenhang mit dem "Remstalaufstand" in dem sogenannten "Tübinger Vertrag" wichtige Grund- und Menschenrechte abgewann.
