About Trash On Your Back

Trash on Your Back is a performative project that invites participants to reflect on how much waste they produce. During the twelve days of the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, participants are asked to individually collect all of their garbage in a trash bag and carry that bags with them, wherever they go.

Participants will be directly confronted with how much waste they produce and will literally feel the weight it carries. Even non-participants will be affected by the performative nature of the project. Everyday they will observe people walking around carrying bags of trash and curiously ask questions, and perhaps want to join in.

What a site to have 10,000 people carrying their trash with them for almost two weeks! At the end of the UN Climate Change Conference, participants will take snap shots of their final trash bags and post them to the Trash on Your Back group webpage on the Flikr.
