About Transbay Terminal

This photo pool is not affiliated with the Transbay Joint Powers Authority in any way.

Designed by Timothy Pflueger and built in 1939 as a transit hub, it originally was the hub for the Key System, Sacramento Northern, Muni, Market Street Railway, and Southern Pacific Railroad. Both Sacramento Northern and SP discontinued service in 1941, and the Key System ceased operations in April 1958. Eventually, it served as a bus hub for AC Transit, samTrans, Greyhound, Muni, WestCAT, and Golden Gate Transit.

Now outdated and underutilized, there is a plan to replace the current Transbay Terminal that would possibly include High-Speed Rail and a Caltrain extension. The Temporary Terminal needed for operations when the replacement is under construction is currently under construction at the lot bordered by Howard, Main, Beale, and Folsom. The temporary terminal will be ready for operation on August 2009 February 1st, 2010 August 7, 2010 and demolition of the current Transbay Terminal is scheduled to begin in October/November 2009. on February 1st, 2010 on June 1st, 2010 sometime in August 13,2010 and will last for eight months.

Here's the demolition overview so that you can plan on when and where to photograph the demolition of the Transbay Terminal. Also, here's the history.
