About Trans-Am Racing

The Trans-Am Series was created in 1966 by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) as a road racing series for small sedans. At first, Trans-Am racers were primarily modified sedans. Competition was divided into two classes- an "Under 2 Liter" class (predominantly small European sedans) and the "Over 2 Liter" class (displacement limited to 5 liters, or 305 cu. in. ).

The series was famous for competition among the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, AMC Javelin and Dodge Challenger in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Many of these historic cars continue to race today in the Historic Trans-Am Seriies. Rules evolved over the years, incorporating FIA touring and grand-touring classes as well as SCCA Club Racing classes.

In 1980, the SCCA developed a weight-to-displacement ratio for handicapping cars. Five-liter, 2600 pound, tube frame cars evenutally became the standard for Trans-Am competitors. Trans-Am racing ended in 2006, but the Trans-Am returns in 2009, with cars based on the SCCA's GT-1 class.
