About Tourist Trap
While the American Heritage dictionary is content with "A place, such as a shop or resort area, that offers overpriced goods and services to tourists." I'm really just looking for great photos of the real tourism experience. The ones that reveal the workings of the industry:
The signs. The guides. The maps. The books. The shops. The promises. The glimpses. The mascots. Things reconstructed. Things polished up. Things collected for your amusement. Things worth the trip.
For example, Yosemite canyon, its geology and ecology, is a natural wonder. Yosemite National Park, its design and economics, is (by my all-inclusive definition) a Tourist Trap. The lodge with its carefully planned rusticity, the oral tradition about 'Old Faithful' -- these are all tourist trappings and have more to do with attracting and amusing visitors than with any other 'reality' pertaining to that place.
Thanks to everyone for helping to create this pool. I'm looking forward to seeing it grow and grow and grow... until it merits its own visitor's center and gift shop.
