About Tourist trains

Add photos of those tourist trains.

A trackless train is a series of connected road vehicles, usually shaped like a railway train. They can also be called road trains or dotto trains and Renner Trains or land trains.

A trackless train usually consists of a gas or diesel engine-powered tractor unit that is made to look like a steam locomotive, and about three trailers. The trailers are usually open-sided, but doors add a safety restraint, and may be covered over with plastic in inclement weather. There are various sizes and designs available, and depending on the design, each trailer may seat between 6 and 20 persons.

Land trains do not run on rails however (although they do follow closely prescribed routes) and the driver of the tractor can steer the train in the manner of a car. They are often decorated to look like nineteenth century steam trains and carry as many as twenty to thirty people, often transferring them from a car park to a visitor attraction, taking them between two distant attractions or carrying them along a scenic route.

They have amusement value, particularly for children, and they are often used for the transport of tourists instead of buses especially in beach resorts. For example, the National Railway Museum runs a trackless train between its York museum and York Minster. In the Swiss town of Gruyères, a trackless train is the only vehicle allowed in the pedestrianised streets. Hiring of trackless trains for special events is possible.
