About Tourelles, Daymarks and Balises

During the Napoleonic period, Britain blockaded the French Coast. The roads were not good enough to move military stores, so there was a lot of coastal traffic inside the rocks to avoid the blockading fleet. These routes were marked with tourelles and balises, most of which are still there. They often do not qualify as lighthouses as many are unlit, and/or you cannot go inside them.

This means the French coast is probably the best marked in the world!

There are very few websites that can accept these interesting structures. So it seemed inevitable that a new Group was needed. Indeed there are plenty of daymarks in countries other than France.
