I am really hoping that more members will add to this post. Actually a lot of the groups members. So please all of you jump in here and add yours to this thread. It could be like a lot of tutorials.Doesn't matter which Topaz you use or if you use other filters in conjunction with Topaz!!!

How I did this…

before:
Pigeon in window before Topaz

after:

pigeon in window

First I opened the picture and duplicated it (always work on a duplicate)
Then I cropped this one
Next into Topaz Adjust, used these settings
Topaz Adjust 3...

Adaptive Exposure: 0.6
Exp Range: 43

Sharpen: 1
Adaptive Saturation: 0
Sat Range: 1
Saturation: 1
Saturation Boost: 1
0
Noise Threshold: 0
Noise Suppression: 0.75
JPEG Artifacts: 0
Use Topaz DeNoise: 0
Then added a B/W adjustment layer, blend mode luminosity
Click on the adjustment layer and used these settings
red: -31
yellow: 32
cyan: 19
blue: 6
magenta: 73
Next held Shift+alt+ctrl+e keys to merge all layers to a new layer on top
Duplicated that layer, high pass filter set to soft light. Lowered the opacity a little

Ok, let's give this a try. This is a way to make sports photos that can be used in lots of ways. Fool around with the settings and you can get something unique to you! Here is our starting photo: #4 original tutorial
1. Crop fairly close to the subject (#4) and adjust levels, highlights, etc.
2. Run through Topaz ReMask. (I won't go into this unless someone wants to see how I do it later). I don't worry about little flaws around the edges as this willl just add to the sketchy effect. Save this photo. Here is my extraction: #4 template tutorial
3. I now switch to Photoshop Elements as I am not proficient enough in Photoshop CS4. Open a white, 8 X 10 background and open your saved player photo. Simplify the player extraction and drag onto the blank background. Duplicate the player photo.
4. Run this through Topaz Simplify Cartoon with these settings:
Simplify:
simplify size - 0.6
feature boost - 3.13
details strength - 0.84
details boost - 1.75
details size - 0.48
remove small - 0
remove weak - .015

Adjust:
brightness - 0.12
contrast - 1.03
saturation - 1.72
sat. boost - 1.92

Edges:
strength - 5
simplify edge - 0.4
reduce weak - 20
reduce small - 0.2
fatten edge - 0
edge type - mono line - normal
Here is the result:
final #4 for tutorial
5. You can stop here if you like. I have been making sports posters for football fund raising. For these, I also add a texture layer, a background fade of teammates, school name, team name, player name and number. My final product looks much like this:
#4 finished portrait

Hope this helps and is of use to you all! Thanks for letting me share. Experiment and make it your own!

Suzi has asked me to recreate this picture.
The original was a raw file processed in Dynamic Photo HDR.
Step 1) Topaz Adjust 'Beauty Detailed' no change to settings except to reduce noise.
Step2) Topaz Clean2 'Crisp Style' to put more detail into the leaves, when this was taken the light was getting poor and there was a slight breeze.
Step3)Topaz Simplify BuzSim, detail strength increased to 0.4.
Step4) Topaz Detail'Micro contrast enhancement'
Details Small 0.44 Medium0.23
Tone Contrast 0.20
The same routine was used with all the pictures in this set with minor variations for adjustments.
Step 2 might not have been necessary because Step 3 softens the image again, but I started with 9 different pictures on this theme and it was easier to run a production line using the same steps for all.
Some of the presets used have been imported from Action Central.

It started as a CGI created and rendered in Poser4, I madeit a few years ago.I have tried it in Fractalius and in Topaz, but Topaz was the best.
Step1) Topaz Adjust 'Beauty Detailed' to bring out hidden details, no variation in settings.
Step2)Topaz Simplify2 'Watercolour' with a slight increase in contrast.
Step3) Topaz Detail 'Micro-contrast enhanced'.

The original image (D90 and Sigma 70-300 APO)...

Mountain Ash

I use Photoshop Elements 7
- size image to 500x750 px
- duplicate layer
- Clean2 / Stylize Details option
- Adjust / Photo Pop option
- rectangle marquee (rounded corners): feather 4 px
- edit / stroke: 3 px inside and used eyedropper to select a red from the berries
- again, the marquee following the path of the red border / Select-Inverse to work with the outer border
- adjustment layer: hue-saturation, slide the lighten tab to lighten outer edges slightly
- flatten image and save

That's as close as I can remember. Anyone have tips or tricks for remembering exactly what actions you took on a image?

Dance Support (by Farkled)

I generally do nothing in LR when I start using Topaz. With this image, I'm pretty sure I fiddled with it in Adjust - just some tweaks for color and saturation before moving to Simplify 2. I usually start with Biz Sym because it is the most generic but with this one I believe I started with Bold Detail. The next step is to increase the detail size sliders and decrease the feature boost sliders - season to taste. The I ran the red up and the magenta slightly. Blue & yellow got left alone.. The key here is to watch the feather stalks because going to far produces all kinds of weird colors.

Original Image (from Nikon D70)
Houses-Ketchikan

After
Houses - Ketchikan, Alaska

The original photo was brought into Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and the "Camera Landscape" profile was applied.

The "Clarity" was then raised to a value of 100.
Image opened into Adobe Photoshop CS4 in the ProPhoto RGB color space.
Ctrl-J to duplicate layer
Topaz Simplify2 "BuzSim" preset added without modification of settings.
A layer mask was added to the layer copy.

Using a black brush with a 40% opacity, selected parts of the images had the BuzSim effect reduced. This was used primarily to bring out some building details - such as windows.

Once I was happy with the overall effect, I flattened the image and converted it to L*A*B color space and tweaked the colors and contrast using a Curves layer.

I then flattened the image and converted it back to RGB. Using CS4's "Save to Web" - the images was downsized, converted to sRGB color space and uploaded to Flickr.

I spent approximately 10 minutes start to finish on this rendering.

Here's another fairly easy "How I did this" for anyone who may be interested...

Original Photo (which I like just fine, by the way!)
Tree and Flowers

Modified using Topaz Detail
Tree and Flowers - Queen Elizabeth Gardens - Vancouver

The modified version may be a bit too cartoony for most, but I created the image only for illustration, so please be kind.

1. Image opened in ACR and a few minor adjustments were made to color/clarity.
2. Opened in PSCS4 and Ctrl-J to dupe layer
3. Topaz Detail applied using "Feature Enhancement" without modification to the preset.
4. Ctrl-E to flatten image
5. Ctrl-J to Dupe Layer
6. (The fun part) Topaz Detail applied using BW_Contrasted with all "Detail" Sliders at "1"
7. Used "Multiply" at about 50% Transparency
8. Flattened Layer
9. Converted to L*a*b Color and tweaked color and contrast.
10 Flattened image and converted back to ProPhoto RGB
11. Saved full size image
12. Used "Save for Web" to reduce image size and convert color to sRGB and saved for Flickr.

Be sure to look at the "Full Size" version of the modified image for the full impact.

I rarely use the presets and if I do it's only ofr a base. I dont knwo the exact steps I took but I geberally start out on all my images by doing a strong noise removal. Then I open TA on a new layer and adjust the deatils and selective stauration ontil I find a level I like. This one was easy as I had to use only one layer to get my results. Last I added a white vingette to help hide the fencein the background.

Suzi asked if I would explain how I did this.

light and shadow

I started with this shot which I had taken for the Shadows and light challenge which required some additional punch

shadows_light original

Note: I work on small images. This one was 5Mb. I am using CS2

I duplicated the BG and ran Denoise with the following settings:
Topaz Denoise 3...
Suppress Noise: 0.55
Clean: 0.04
Recover Details: 0.11
Reduce Blur: 0
Recover Blue: 0
Recover Red: 0
Clean Color: 0.1
Remove Color Specks: 1
Add Grain: 0

I duplicated the Denoise layer and ran Adjust with these settings:
Topaz Adjust 3...
Details Mode: 1
Adaptive Exposure: 0.33
Exp Range: 39
Contrast: 0.21
Brightness: 0
0.02
0.02
Details: 1.69
Details Boost: 0.83
Details Threshold: 0.15
Details Radius: 25
Sharpen: 1
Adaptive Saturation: 0.5
Sat Range: 15
Saturation: 1.05
Saturation Boost: 1.1
0
Noise Threshold: 0
Noise Suppression: 0.75
JPEG Artifacts: 0

This improved the saturation and sharpness but didn’t give me the effect I wanted so I decided to soften the image a little with Simplify

I duplicated the Adjust layer and ran Simplify with these settings:
Topaz Simplify 2...
Output Mode: 0
Colorspace: 0
Simplify Size: 0.25
Feature Boost: 0
Details Strength: 0.22
Details Boost: 1
Details Size: 0.2
Remove Small: 0
Remove Weak: 0.1
Contrast: 1.14
Brightness: 0.01
Saturation: 1.21
Saturation Boost: 0.95
Edge Type: 7
Edge On Black: 0
Edge Strength: 0.39
Edge Simplify: 0.41
Reduce Weak: 16
Reduce Small: 0.2
Fatten Edge: 0

I wanted to make the leaves in the foreground a bit more interesting so I ran the photo through Clean

I duplicated the Simplify layer and ran Clean with these settings:
Topaz Clean 2...
Clean Strength: 5
Clean Radius: 8
Clean Threshold: 0.5
Edge Sharpness: 1.25
Edge Radius: 1.03
Edge Accent: 3
Texture Strength: 0.2
Texture Boost: 1.19
Texture Size: 2

Then I brought a bit of detail back into the picture

I duplicated the Clean layer and ran Detail with these settings:
Topaz Detail...
Small Details: 0
Small Boost: 0
Medium Details: 0.09
Medium Boost: 0.04
Large Details: 0.12
Large Boost: 0.12
Brightness: 0
Contrast: 0
Protect Highlight: 0
Protect Shadow: 0
Yellow-Blue: 0
Cyan-Red: 0
Magenta-Green: 0
Saturation: 0
Saturation Boost: 0
Hue: 0

Finally I merged the Clean and Detail layers and adjusted the opacity to 85%. I tweaked the Levels slightly. I reduced the opacity of the Simplify layer to 65% and flattened the image.

I was asked for the steps in this photo.
Epcot character 1

I am only giving general steps because 1) I really can't remember the specific settings, etc and 2) those settings would really work only if you had the same photo...size, resolution, color etc.

First steps include cropping and general enhancements--Denoise and Adjust follow. Use Clean2 to get a simple clean look (think I might have used one of the skin smooth presets/tweaked for this). Copy, convert to sketch (I used the Gaussian blur sketch technique), paint with white anything not wanted in the final picture. Or could use Remask on the original and then do the sketch.

Do an edit, define pattern on the original copy. Using a brush/low opacity (I used Default #46) start brushing on the sketch until you have the look you want. I do some very light brushing beyond the sketch to give the next step some background texture.

I follow this up with blending of textures. The 1st one I used was Monet by Solstock (DeviantArt) which gives a soft watercolory look and an overall texture. I could, and did quit there.

Epcot character

But later applied Mars by Resurger (DeviantArt) texture which gave the deeper colors to the top picture.

Suzi got me to share. It's not too detailed because I didn't record anything. But this is the finished edit and who I got it:
God has given you one face, and you make yourself another. ~William Shakespeare

-Find a picture of a face
-Take your custom shape tool and cut shapes of the face. I find in PS there are a zillion ways of achieving same effect. I make new layer, draw out the shape, make the face picture active, hit CONTROL J and you'll end up with a layer that has just a piece of the face in whatever shape you selected. Do this a few times, trying to frame the face.
- When you have all your shapes, take each layer into Topaz and put a different effect to each layer.
-I used a shadow effect as well, from PS, to make the layers stand out even more.
-I put the models face onto a different background. I previously removed her face from a stark white background so placement on a new background was simple. But there are various ways to add a new background: cut/paste, blend, mask....whatever is easier and more fun for you.

That's pretty much it. If you do this, can you share with me? I'd love to see what's created......helps with more ideas and learning. Just send me a flickr mail msg.

what a great idea, if only more user could show us the way. Maybe a post with just using on product, say Topaz Adjust.
I'm saving for the product and intent to use it on cars and trucks. There are some great images here and what I understand from watching the links from Topaz is that when you complete the image you can save the settings, I only know about cameras but if there were a way to save and post the settings from an image that would be great and a lot easier than typing out the whole list.
In a couple of other forms it's all about sharing, a few tutorials who be very helpful.

Apply Brash to the chosen image. Modify the Saturation and Saturation boost if it is too much. If there is bright white in the image Brash tends to make it very blue. You can either try brushing it out within Adjust 5 (but that tends to make it too dull again) or select it in the finised image and desaturate the blue to a more acceptable level.

Duplicate the layer and apply my own sketch preset (in Simplify) settings shown below

Simplify
Colourspace - YCbCr
Simplify size - 0.1
Details strength - 1.12
Details size - 1
Details boost - 1.22
Remove weak - 0.16

Adjust
Brightness - 0.65
Contrast - 0.12
Saturation boost - 0.2

Edges
Mono-edge fine
Edge strength - 3.75
Simplify edges - 0.28
Reduce weak - 10
Reduce small - 0.1

You may need to adjust the Reduce small/weak settings in edges to get a clean sketch

Back in PS change the Blending mode of the Sketch layer to Darker Colour and the opacity to around 50% (Darken might work if you don't have Darker colour)

The technique works best with photos of buildings/steps etc, preferably without strong contrast, as the colours are very dramatic. However I was pleased with the result - making a fairly dull shot into a more interesting picture and have used it several times since. However it definitely isn't photo-realistic!

WoW that edit has really made the picture take off, I like that.
As you say, not photo realistic, but who cares!

Hi -- Suziqb asked me to share some of my techniques here. As I was browsing through the topics, I tried something new and decided to share it here, so here goes ...

Before:
IMG_8466_orig

After:
Ready for those lazy, hazy days

How I did it:

I started this out with a preset that was in one of these threads, but now I can’t find it again to give proper credit! It simulates a drawing and it’s pretty cool so I’ll repeat it here (as best I can) and will gladly give credit to the original author, when and if I can ever figure out who it was.

First step: duplicate the image (and work on the duplicate)

Topaz Adjust 5: Drawing Preset

Adaptive Exposure: 1.0
Regions: 11
Contrast .8
Brightness: .62
Protect Highlights: 0
Protect Shadows: .19
Detail:
Strength: 1.8
Detail Boost: 1.5
Threshold: .04
Radius: 50
Sharpen: 1.76
Process details independently: checked
Adaptive Saturation: 0
Color Regions: 1.0
Saturation: 0
Saturation boost: .25
Hue: 0

After applying the Drawing Preset, I did a curves adjustment to darken the drawing a bit. Then I duplicated the drawing layer and used a preset I created as follows:

Topaz Simplify 3: Outline Preset

Use Edge mode
Simplify Size, Feature Boost & Details Strength: all set to 0
Details Boost: 1
Details Size: .2
Remove Small: 0
Remove Weak: .1
Mono Line – Normal
Edge Strength: 3.61
Simplify Edge: .72
Reduce Weak: 16
Reduce Small: 0

I set the outline layer’s blend mode to multiply, then I duplicated the outline layer.

You can leave it as a B&W drawing or let a little of the original color show through by bringing in the original image and experimenting with opacity.
