Flood?
|
Hi everybody,
we were discussing the topic of whether or not to restrict the number of pictures that each member can send to this group, and my first response was: send them *ALL* (see this post). I must admit I just couldn't magine how popular some of you guys are !!!
I suggest the following rule: please express your opinion about this, as it is you and not me, making this group what it is :-)
Each member can post up to 11 pictures into the group, but everybody is of course free to use the group tags (e.g., top-v999) for ALL other highly viewed pictures in their photostreams.
In this way we could avoid flooding of the pool and ensure that all top-viewed pictures can easily be found.
Good idea? Suggestions for alternatives?

sounds good to me - consistent with your number 111 minimum.... I like it!

Actually, I was mulling this over earlier and had the thought. The numbers go up by 222 after starting at 111. Now 111 has a historical precedent, but it would make lots of sense to start with 222. As it is, I'm only half way to putting in my 111s. I'll stop here per your suggestion above.
Also, as Flickr gets older, everyone's numbers will be increasing. Old lines like 111 will become increasingly meaningless.
But having the minimum at 222 would make the group more interesting I think. Maybe the minimum should be slowly increased with time? Just a thought.

I'll totally obey to the rules :) A question though: will these be the first 11 in the descending most viewed list, or just a random selection?
After I get the answer, I'll start deleting my flooding photos
Sorry for that.

I'm trying to figure out what is the main focus of this group.
As this group gets older with time we will be watching the same photos grow from Top-V111 to222...333 It may be busy now since the group is new and people already have the numbers (not me) and are adding their photos. But I think this will slow down because it will take time for new photos and their numbers to grow.
Now watching the new groups of Top-V111 will be interesting to me because I'll be able to see what photos are getting views and how long it takes. And I think a pattern will be; that the already popular photographers will grow faster just because we (or maybe just myself) always look at our favorites first before looking at new photographs from people we haven't seen their work.
Watching this growth of new photos and views is more interesting to me than watching popular photos just get more popular.
So I think I'll be interested in the
tags of 111 (to see what is the fad of interest) and then what ever the highest tag is 5555 ( to see what has maintained the interest of viewers. )
All the middle stuff will be interesting for awhile but I believe that I will soon tire of seeing all the same photos.
So my interest will be the new best
And the best of the best.
I could be wrong.
Am I making any sense?
But then I'm not really trusting that this will be an accurate pool of photos since there are ways of adding views quickly and less honestly. So I'm thinking the top-F pool might be a better measuring tool.
These are just a few thoughts and I was wondering what others are thinking will be the main focus of this group.

Who would be bothered to do this and why? I find it inconceivable.

It seems it is out of control all ready with some people with 60 photos in the pool and its a little late to
close the barn door. Why would anyone bother to bring their totals up,they would only be fooling themselves.

Please cast my vote against any sort of throttle. For me, it's self-restricting anyway -- I only have a few pictures that meet the v111 standard.
Mainly I find it hard to keep track of all the different rules for all the different groups -- one per week, one per day, three on every second Thursday unless it's a leap year or your pants are on fire and you need a hug. That's why I like the current top-v and top-f rules as they are: either you picture makes the cut or it doesn't. Simple.
Simple == beautiful.

Thanks everybody for the thoughts and input on numbers and rules (and more).
I seem to get from this discussion that some kind of restriction on the number of pictures per member might be useful. I think it'll be good thing to put an upper limikt to the number of pictures per user, thereby avoiding strong inequalities in the pool, and giving less popular members realitevly more visibility. The rest can still be found by tagging.
I am especially grateful for the thoughtful comments of lifelive. I agree that one can watch/use this group in quite different ways. I am also interested in spotting the new best, as well as getting to know the absolute top-viewed ones. Therefore, I wouldn't remove the lower-end tags, even though the number of members and the general traffic and volume on flickr will undoubtedly increase. New users still have to start from scratch, though!
About the focus of the group: I set up this group and top-f to create exclusive pools and give top-viewed and top-faved pictures a place of their own in flickr.
I realized soon enough that the viewed and faved may tell very different stories. Since only members can favorite pictures, and they can do that only once per pic, getting high f-values is probably much harder than getting a high number of views (e.g., through external links). Nevertheless, I find it interesting to see what kind of pictures (and of whom) get viewed the most.
So, the group really serves different purposes: see the new best, watch them rise (see the rate of increase), and see the absolute top-viewed pictures... and more?!
I am happy to hear your opinion and suggestions ...

i just noticed that in the group pool the top 2 tags are 'topv111' and 'topv333'. Would this be different from tagging 'top-v111' and 'top-v333'?
Just wondering... =)

If there is to be a limit of 11 per person, then I ask the administrator to enforce it, as 3 people are currently over the limit.
lotusutol, based on my experimentation with tag searches, there is no difference with or without the hyphen.

- 'topv111' and 'top-v111' are treated the same by Flickr.
- the 11 maximum is being enforced daily by top-v's 7 admins (who live in different time zones around the World). This means that new pics added today will be checked today. The group's 'counter' lags when changes are made to member submissions, but clicking on the 'top posters' links (top left of page) will reveal their actual count. :`)
Thanks In Advance for remembering to appropriately TAG
(scroll down page) every image submitted to top-v's pool! :`)
