About tondo tondo tondo! [a group home for special round images]

- A tondo is a circular painting. While this group expands that definition to round works in various media (including photography) the use of the word tondo is pertinent to the selection of images. When one makes a tondo painting it is by definition an act of construction. That is, the image is composed on a panel or canvas that has a specific (circular) shape and compositional decisions are made (consciously or not) with that format in mind. Thus the use of the word “tondo” in the group’s name -- because of the word’s roots in painting – is intended to imply a preference for images that demonstrate an intentionality in the construction and composition of an image.

The problem with a group based on a shape is the implication that we are only interested in that aspect. Please do not post an image simply because it is circular. We are looking for images that push the conceptual and compositional possibilities of the circle format. Even further, beyond the shape, we want images that are compelling.

(1) This is a group for tondos: deliberately constructed images that are in a circular format. Not oblong, not oval. While the format of the photograph you post may be rectangle or square the central (and preferably only) subject of the photograph should be a tondo. Please note, this is probably not the place for the typical “squared circle” image.

(2) This is a group for original work. Work made by the person posting it.

(3) Work in any media is acceptable: painting, photography (straight, digital and processed), drawing, prints, sculpture, fabric,ceramics and digital images. However, in relation to the latter (digital images) this is probably not the place to post "Amazing Circles" or Dumpr produced images.

(4) It is not enough that an image simply include some sort of circle or circular element. For instance, this image, which includes a central circular motif does not fit in this group

[You will notice though that I have cropped it to a circular form and used that as an icon for the group. Sneaky.]

(5) Images will be selected based on the subjective opinion of the moderators. Please do not be offended if your work is not placed in the pool.

(6) This is an all ages group. While it is categorized as "moderate" please do not post pornographic or sexually suggestive work.
