- sharpness
At low ISO speeds, it is sharp. Of course nothing comparable to my 5D, but p&s-wise sharp. At higher ISOs (800+) do not expect the same sharpness due to noise reduction. However, the noise reduction is not very aggressive, so it's not all smudged with artifacts.

- Noise
I'm not a noise expert, but this result seems good to me. Up to ISO400, the contrast and sharpness is kept, as well as decent amount of details. Below are 100% crops of different ISOs.

- Color
To my taste, it's washed-out. However, the vivid mode starts to give some good colors. But this is for landscape, I haven't tested it for portrait yet. The shots above were both boosted for saturation inside camera.
Note: When I opened the JPGs on my Mac using Preview, the photos were super-washed-out. The reason was that the image viewer could not detect that the "color profile" is sRGB. When I set the images to sRGB, the colors got better. But anyway, the colors are on the neutral side.

- smart range
I was very curious about this function. As the images show, it works quite well, under normal HDR situation, but not in strong ones. As I expected, the result lacks enough contrast and it looks a bit washed-out. But it does the job. If you don't like it, there is also the old bracketing technique.

- panorama
This is a very useful mode, I believe. You can always find yourself in a situation where there are more things to fit in. What I liked about it is the "portrait" panorama mode, where you hold the camera in portrait orientation and sweep. The result is smaller in length, but wider in height. What didn't work was the MOTION PANORAMA. It didn't work at all! I tried it on cars and bikes, but no success. It also made the camera HALT two time, when I had to remove and put back the battery. Maybe it's fixed in the first firmware (hope so!).

- battery life
It is very poor. But honestly, I didn't let it charge for a long time (only 1h30), but when I removed it, the gauge was showing full. I shot 100 pictures, including some panoramas and some smart range modes, and the battery was gone. I don't expect a DSLR battery life, but 100 shots is really low! I think I'm going to buy at least one more battery. Another issue is charging: there is no charger included. To charge you have to connect the camera directly to the plug. So you can't charge one battery and shoot with another one at the same time, which is a trouble.

Update 14.08.10: I charged the battery fully this time (took around 2h30), and I could shoot around 200 images with the single charge. This is way better.

- handling
The grip on the camera is very good and you can easily shoot with one hand. However, the top dial is very disappointing. It is not very sensitive; you have to role it a lot to see the effect. I wished it had clicks. It is also in the "wrong" direction, meaning that you move it to left and the bar on the screen goes to right! Moreover, it could do much more, but what it only does is to change the single shot to multiple, delayed shot, pre-capture, and bracketing. It could be used in menus or to change the shutter speed in the M mode.

- Interface
The menu is quite extensive and given the fact that you should go to the menus A LOT, it is really tiresome and disappointing. But maybe I am groaning because it was the first day, and I didn't know my way around and I wanted to check all settings. But one thing that could make life much easier was to let the user go to the previous place in the menu the next time. But sadly, each time you press menu, it goes to the default position. So if you want to use "smart range" once and want to disable it immediately, you have to go through all menu to find it again.

But all-in-all, I think it's a very capable camera. You just need to know its weaknesses and its strengths, and this takes some time!

Update 05.08.10: I just forgot to mention that the screen on this camera is simply AWESOME! The pictures look much better on the Samsung's screen than my Mac's! The colors, contrast and punch are excellent. The clarity under direct sunlight with sunglasses on (!) is still great! The viewing angle is also very large.

Hi Alireza202,

many thanks for your nice and helpful tests. I purchased the WB2000 after I wasn't satisfied with the Canon S90. The Canon shoots good pictures under every condition but lacks speed and suffer under chromatic abberation in the picture corners.
Equal between WB2000 and S90 is the approach to prevent noise. The cameras desaturate colors in dark areas. This is the reason why Canon's i-contrast pseudo HDR function produce muddy colors in the only brightened areas. The WB2000 HDR function delivers far better results. Something I dont like is a kind of lensflare pattern if you direct shot in the sun. It also looks to me that the WB2000 autofocus doesn't work during video recording. Could you confirm?

Best regards

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your comparison between S90 and Wb2000. It's true that the Smart Range on WB2000 does a very good job. I'm really fond of this feature. I'm also very fond of the Sweep Panorama mode. It is so cool! I can't comment on the video mode though, as I haven't used it much so far.

Heh, I agree, the screen is too good! Pictures look great on the camera but then not so great once I get them on the PC. But I have overall been impressed by the image quality, even at ISO 400 or 800.

I have some samples in this thread - forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1001&th...

Michael, AF during video does seem to be address by the latest firmware - forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1001&th...

I have a few requests I sent to Samsung:

1) User Customization of the function of the thumbwheel and navigation wheel. If the camera is in "P" mode, rotation the navigation wheel does nothing - you have to hit Menu or Fn button first. I would like to make it faster to change settings. Same for the thumbwheel - I would like to be able to select what settings it controls.

2) The AMOLED screen goes black during 10fps burst mode - this makes it impossible to track a moving subject.

3) I would like the option of 60fps 1280x720 video, as was advertised when the TL350 was first announced.

Hi all,

I purchased this camera last week and I've been taking quite a few shots with it. I've been really pleased with the performance so far and I can only assume that once I become more au fait with the tools available, I'll enjoy it even more.

However there is one exception - I'm really disappointed with the "washed out" colour on the photos, especially the ones that are taken without a flash. I know that this can be "fixed" my applying vivid mode after the photo is taken, but for me this isn't the best solution.

This is when I'm using the "auto" modes, where it choses the scene for you.

My previous "every day" camera was a Canon IXUS 75 and that had GREAT colour (I would still be using it if I could but it was stolen!).

So - is there a solution to this, something I'm missing, or can anyone suggest a better option to "fix" the colour at the time of capture, rather than in post production?

Many thanks!

To those of you waiting with baited breath for a resolution on this one, I've worked out you can set the camera to take photos in "vivid" mode right off the bat - no post production required.

I'm going to see how this goes for a few days.

However I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on the colour results with this camera.

Cheers,

Kate

Hello there. I am actually an owner of the Samsung WB2000 camera. I read through your first impression and it was great. I have been using this camera for a while now, and have found some problem with my camera. I tried searching on the web, only to see some similar problems like the purple flares on images. If you have the time and stop by my photo stream, you might be able to see what I am trying to say.

I'm not sure this is the characteristic of the back-light sensor, but I have been seeing this purple mask very often especially under tungsten lighting. Some times I can see the same problem when shooting someone with dark clothes under outdoor conditions. Does your camera exhibit this problem?

I have a similar problem as low6375.

Noticed a pretty weird grey-ish character when shooting in some darker locations and also with higher iso. Even saw it during clear days taking pictures of architecture and half the buildings of yellow bricks turned up grey-ish instead. Same goes for any kind of green colour found in woods, etc., as if it was a kind of bug or cheat in order to cover for the lack of dynamic range in the camera.

Tried circumventing it with changing the white-balance temperature but did not quite succeed, only pushed the problem a bit.

Taken more than 10.000 + images with it since last autumn when I bought it and I recently also noticed sensor dust on the camera, which tells it's probably not the most airtight construction.

All in all a pretty ok camera, but new models hit the street all the time.
