About Thurmaston, Leicestershire

This is a group for sharing photographs taken in the village of Thurmaston in Leicestershire.

Thurmaston is immediately north of Leicester on either side of the A607 which effectively divides the village in two. The older part of the village is to the west of the A607. The church of Saint Michael and All Angels is here along with a village green and several shops, pubs and clubs. This part of the village is alongside the River Soar, the Grand Union Canal and the Watermead Country Park.

The area to the east of the A607 is more modern and consists mainly of suburban housing. It is effectively an extension of Leicester. There are proposals to build 5,000 homes on farmland adjacent to this side of Thurmaston which would fill in the remaining countryside between Thurmaston, Leicester and Barkby. These proposals have met strong opposition locally.

The northern part of Thurmaston has a modern shopping centre which seems to be more popular than the planners anticipated. The access to the centre is often congested with traffic and it can be difficult to find a parking space. New housing is being developed adjacent to it. Elizabeth Park is nearby as well as a cemetery with a recently restored chapel. To the north of Thurmaston is the town of Syston.

Perhaps because of it's proximity to Leicester, Thurmaston has a larger proportion of commercial developments such as offices and factories than most villages of it's size. The population of the village is about 9,000 people.
