Yet another newbie hooked on this technique saying HI

Hello all,
I was doing some searching on Etsy the other day and came across a photographer that is doing this technique. First impression, WOW. This is what i've been trying to do in PS for years now but it always came out looking contrived and forced. I have been a photographer for 20+ years now and work in the advertising field. Needless to say...i immediately went on Ebay and started searching for a KD. Plus, I also love building contraptions :). I can't wait to find my first bubble glass view finder camera and start posting my results. I just love the "art" mood/effect this technique gives, and to think, you're shooting digital still so no waste of money on developing :). A huge thank you to the innovators that started this trend in photg and if there are any suggestions you can give to help me start, i'd love to hear from you.
so....HI
Peter

Hey, Peter, I'm a fellow newb. When I first saw this technique, I loved it immediately..and now that I'm doing it, I like it even more. One thing that really helped me is rustmans myContraption-v2 design. I used it to make my contraption for my Duaflex, and used a modified version of it to create a contraption for my new Argoflex 75 that I just got in the mail yesterday :D I look forward to seeing some of your shots

Hi Ninja,
How do you like the Argoflex on first impression over the KD?

The argoflex seems about comparable to the Duaflex. I havn't had a chance to take any pictures with the argoflex yet, so I don't know how the pics it takes are going to differ from the duaflex...but I'll be finding that out shortly. I'm going to be in Milwaukee tomorrow and I'm planning on taking a lot of pictures, so I'll let you know how the argoflex compares.

I snapped off a few quick pics through the argoflex tonight and came up with this one. Overall, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the duaflex and argoflex.

The Argoflex was pretty much a direct (albeit heavier) rip of the Duaflex.

I love it. Thanks for showing a comparison. I just Ebay'd a Argoflex 75 yesterday and it should arrive this week. I'm also heading out to the antique stores around this area to see what they my have. It seems as though this tech is catching on and the prices are starting to rise, so i better jump in now. Love the cat. I have two and it seems they are best and at their cutest when sleeping :). Now, to figure out my "contraption" and lens for the D300. Post more :).

Okay, I went on Ebay and got a couple of cameras to try. Now the hard part...waiting for them to arrive. While I wait, I was hoping someone could answer a question or two about what else I'd need besides the "contraption".
I have a D70 and D300 Nikon. I'm thinking of making the D70 the TTV camera.
For lenses I have:
50mm 1.4 nikkor
85mm 1.8 nikkor
18-70 3.5-5.6 nikkor
18-200 VR 3.5 nikkor
and a few others. None seem to be macro so I was wondering if I would need to get a macro.
The cameras I have coming are the Argus 75 and Ansco Rediflex.
Thanks,
Peter

One warning if you are going to clean the lenses in your Argus. There is one spring that is used to hold the viewfinder cap open or closed, and it's a pain to get the thing back on when you reassemble the camera. How much "dirt" you want in your final pictures is just a matter of which look you prefer. Zombiefactory has shot some outstanding pictures through her very dirty viewfinder, while rustman's ttv images are pretty clean.

Hello all. Okay here's the story :).
I got the Argus 75 in the mail around 11:30. Wanted to try the technique when we went on a new office walk through at 1:00. Being that I was at work I had 10 minutes to build a contraption no time to clean the camera, and rush out the door. Having never tested anything, only going off what I learned from the posts I've read (HUGE thank you to all by the way). I was using my D70 with a 50mm 1.4 lens (need close up filters on my next shopping spree). What a blast this thing is to use. I can't wait until I clean it and build a sturdier contraption. Now I'm officially one of you :). Yipee.
Not sure how to post the pictures directly to this post so here's the link.

NUTS!....so you were saying about the spring? um...how does it go back in? I though it was all back together until I turned it upside down and heard a "tink" as it fell on the floor. For the life of me i can't remember how or where it goes. HELP :).

it's very clean now though ;)

There are2 brass posts with grooves in them on the inside of the viewfinder. The hooks on either side of the spring go in these grooves. The trick is to get the spring in place on those posts, then carefully re-attach the viewfinder to the main camera body. I believe the bend of the spring should be pointing toward the front of the camera when it's in place correctly.

Okay, thanks. I'll take a look into it tonight. Fingers, crossed.
I am also going to clean my new (old) Ansco rediflex, here's hoping that goes well. Looking through the glass on the ansco, it looks to give some cool distortions. I can hardly wait to test that one too.

Great, you had to go and mention the ansco rediflex. Now I have one of those on the way courtesy of ebay. That brings my collection of old TLR cameras to 5. :)

sorry about that :). Reading the articles on the web got me into the top 9 to look for. I'm keeping the others a secret so the price on Ebay doesn't go up until i get 1. My collection is now 3. Just got a Duaflex (orig) won today. Stop me before I buy them alllllllll.

Call me compulsive :).
Right now I'm trying a few different models (if I can get them) to see which gives the result I like best. In the end I'll probably only keep 2-3 and put the rest back on Ebay...or here :).
I love the effects this format gives, I'm back in love with my inner artist. Advertising tends to take it out of you after a nuuuuumber of years.

Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. I have 5 old TLR's currently as well as one on the way, and I have a seagull TLR that was purchased new a few year ago, so I'll have to play around with that one as well. I love this method for taking pictures.

If you're getting a Rediflex and plan on cleaning it, be careful of the front small viewfinder piece of glass as it's not strongly in place. I took some compressed air to it and almost blew it out of the camera. Still in place so i got lucky, just be careful. I love the top glass though big and about 2"x2".
have fun and post pics.

Should I start a "what's your favorite TTV camera" post?
Might be interesting and informative to those getting into this or options for those already in.

I think that would be a good topic. It would be a good way of sharing characteristics and quirks of certain cameras.

It is a Rediflex that I have on the way. I'll make sure and watch for that piece of glass..thanks for the heads-up on that.

I think the Rediflex is my new favorite for TtV. The larger viewfinder is great and I love the edge distortion. I now see what you mean about the glass. The Rediflex wasn't exactly a high quality camera, I guess, but it works great for TtV. I'll be going to Devils Lake, WI to do some hiking this weekend and I'm hoping to get some good shots with the Rediflex...which I will post to the group, of course.

Hi,

Lot5Studio mentioned that small viewfinder piece of glass on the front of the Rediflex. Well, I guess mine has probably fallen out numberous times and is really quite scratched. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a similar piece to replace it?

I'll probably just end up digging at a surplus store here, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.
