Don't worry about getting the 35mm f2, you'd always be able to use it on the bigger Nikons. Plus, that'd work in FX bodies, this is only for DX.
If I get this, ALL my lenses will be DX.

Niloy Bhai, I'm already a 35mm f2 owner for several months now...... :)
I bought it solely for street photography with my DX cameras........ I don't use it on film bodies........ I rather prefer the 50mm f1.8 for the film bodies......
and 35mm on film is not exactly a wide lens....... so, I use the 24mm f2.8 on film bodies...... and of late, would be delighted to test the 18-35mm f3.5-4.5 on film for the first time...... these lenses give the real wide feeling, unlike the 'widish' focal length of the 35mm.......
the new 35mm is perfect for street photography with DX cameras...... 50mm is just too narrow for the same purpose....... and my experience with the 35mm f2 tells me that this 35mm focal length may be all you need to capture action on the streets........
where's Shaf??

It'll be available this March.
The wise thing is to just get someone to bring it from abroad.
I ordered my 55-200 VR directly from Adorama to ship to my home. Everything was fine, but then the guys at customs charged me an unbelievable amount in taxes and fines.

, I tried out the 35mm on my kit lens. I don't like it. I only tried it indoors, but it looks bland. Maybe it's better outdoors. For now, I'm cautiously unimpressed.

Niloy Bhai......... are you talking of the 35mm f2 AF-D?.........
I was actually talking about the 35mm focal length, not specific lenses in that focal length........

I second the "35 mm is the king of street photography"- notion too, Sharif bhai. Many people blindly go for a 50mm, don't know why. If I can't capture a 10 ft x 6 ft sq area inside my sensor then whats the use of a 50mm in the rugged corners of the alley?

ok...guruttopurno ki eijonne je goto koekmash ami ei lens tar jonne ha hutash kortesilam? :) ar kono reason thakar kotha na...newez...
as i have already said...
"at the heart of the image" is the tagline that gives nikon a clear +5 over other manufacturers in a scale of 10...from me ofcourse....who has been a nikon fan for last, maybe who knows...20+ years...dont laugh...it was family influence and nothing else...
recently when i was deciding on a DSLR i actually tried it to be more rational...i weighted 3 cams, one each from nikon canon and sony...
nikon prevailed..but some "ninduk" wud say just because i was a nikon fan i went for it...
but at the same time there are many ppl who would swear upon god that i have voted for canon on their purchasing decision...
saying that...it cant be my fault or nikon's that they have released wonders like D3,D700,D300 and D90...while canon went on to release cams like 40D and 50D one of which just stops working (at least around here) and one of which out resolves the best of their lenses....
and now comes this sweet lil thing..."the" normal lens for reduced image circles...i would say it THE ...because it specifically targets
these cams...and nikon does have another 35mm for full frame...and it costs 100$ more than the new one...
ofcourse there are folks in sites like DPReview who would go on for a "boycott" of nikon lenses...more or less i dont count ppl who shoots dogs and their grandchildren or at max they would go on to shoot a electric wire with a sunset in the background and pat their own back...
they might have fancy equipments...but their photographic sense is less than the one here who shoots with a cell phone ... a photographer who becomes a photographer because it is a technological marvel...should be called a cameraman at best and not a photographer...
btw as far as i know this boycott joke was initiated by a joker mr ken rockwell...ambassador of JPGs (!!!)...if anyone can clarify this plz do...dont have the time to search the net...:(
yet again nikon came up with a product for the not so "savvy" (in technical sense of course) with a price that would allow us to buy one...
so the end result is that WE the owners of the toy cams like D40/x or D60 who do photography for photography's sake at last got another "toy" for them...which will help them use their creativity which would help them take better pictures...no not as in pixel by pixel quality but by the content of that image...

and now my own purchasing decision...
this is a new lens without any review...we dont know how it will perform...
and i have already ordered a tamron 17-50 2.8...i am gonna stick to it...
it is 1.25 stops slower than the 35mm but the 35 mm isnt that expensive either...and 6 months down the line i guess it will come down to $150...and if all goes well...inshallah i will add this small kiddo to my kit...

Me, I was really looking for a prime that autofocuses on my D40x. But I don't like the 35mm focal length. I tried the 35mm on my kit lens, and it looks too bland. Too plain and simple...

Nikon is really listening to their customers, thanks to them that Nikon comes up with a lens like this. I can bet this will be a major hit in Nikkor lineup. Wish Canon would come up with something similar, till then I’ll be sticking to my Sigma 30mm ……. One thing I can tell you this lens ( Nikon one) will be the ultimate street photography lens on crop sensor….

Defineatly more coming. Last year, before the new 50mm was brought out, they unofficialy said they had FOURTEEN lenses in the pipeline! Granted, I think most of them will be much needed updates instead of totally new lenses like this one, but that sounds great nevertheless!

a new series of lenses in the 70-200 fixed aperture range is badly needed by Nikon........ Canon has led this range for long with as many as 4 options..........
f4 ($600)
f4 IS ($1,100)
f2.8 ($1,190)
f2.8 IS ($1,700)
....... Nikon only has.........
80-200 f2.8 AF-D ($1,110)
the discontinued and horrifically expensive 80-200 f2.8 AF-S and
70-200 f2.8 VR ($1,700)
and there is big gap in the fast wide prime segment.........
in this area, Canon has.........
35mm f2.0 ($300)
35mm f1.4 ($1,180)
28mm f2.8 ($180)
28mm f1.8 ($420)
24mm f2.8 ($305)
24mm f1.4 USM ($1,170)
24mm f1.4 USM II ($1,700)
20mm f2.8 ($445)
in the same area, Nikon currently has...........
35mm f2.0 ($350)
28mm f2.8 ($250)
24mm f2.8 ($310)
20mm f2.8 ($520)
thats about it............... so you can easily see that options are really limited........ I think this is one segment Nikon might just touch up a bit........ these lenses are precious for ppl willing to do street photography in extreme low light........ they gotta be faster than f2.8.......... to catch more light than the 50mm f1.4, you need 28mm or 24mm f1.4......... the legenday 28mm f1.4 was discontinued in 2006 for lack of interest......... Canon has three options in that f1.4 segment......... Nikon has none....... this is a very specialised segment alright...... but these have to accompany quality cameras like the D3x, D3 and D700...... otherwise, the whole purpose of making such cameras is lost........

@Shaf....... ami ultrawide ekhane consider kori nai...... karon ota Nikon-er empty space na......... aar 14mm f2.8 is much worse than the superlative 14-24mm f2.8........ you get a 14mm f2.8 prime for $1,420, but you get an even sharper 14-24mm ultrawide zoom for $1,650........ so, which one to choose from (wll, of course, if you can afford it :)
borong Canon-er empty space holo ultrawide zoom and fisheye....... Canon has a 15mm f2.8 fisheye for full-frame........ NO FISHEYE FOR CROPPED SENSOR........ Nikon has a 16mm fisheye for full-frame and 10.5mm fisheye for cropped sensor....... Sigma is actually the king here with 4 fisheyes!!....... two each for diagonal and circular..... 10mm, 15mm, 8mm, 4.5mm.......

I don't think Nikon will ever do that........ the 85mm f1.4 for full-frame is already over $1,000........ and it becomes a 127mm f1.4 lens on cropped sensor....... somehow, it doesn't feel right........ they might come up with an AF-S version of the 85mm f1.8, which is $400...... not sure whether they'll make it DX or not......
Posted 40 months ago.

remember that they also came up with 50mm f1.4 and 60mm f2.8 Micro recently in AF-S, but not in DX......... its the focal length that determines whether they need to make it DX or not....... 50, 60, 85, 105, 135 these are not DX focal lengths........ 35mm brings DX focal length very near to 50mm, which is why it was made DX.......

Here's the problem. I don't see myself being excited by the 35mm on DX.
The focal length just isn't exciting to me. When I see the photos, I feel: "OK, now where's the rest of the picture?"
I'm used to using the 18mm end of my kit lens, and zooming out near to the max of my 55-200mm. I like the extreme ends of my lenses, for the dramatic effect it adds to the pictures.
Plus, I checked out the 35mm focal length on my 18-55mm VR. It's very unflattering, and is maxed out at f5.3 already. So far, I don't enjoy it.
This lens is my only option at $200 for a 1.8 that autofocuses. I would like a 50mm 1.4, but that's almost $600 now. What I'd like even more is the 85mm. But that's $400, and won't autofocus on my D40x either.
Both of my current lenses cost about $200. Maybe it's time to add another.
I DO often push to ISO 3200, 'cuz I need it quite often. Maybe this'll really help. It DOES have such nice bokeh!

hmm..but i am excited bro...:)
i do love the widest end of my kit lens...and the other focal length i use most is the 35mm +/- 3mm ... yessss.....think about the 5.3 against the 1.8... god...full 3 stops difference....i will be waiting for the lens to arrive in the market and the price come down a bit...:)
