The Three Gorges Dam spans the Yangtze River at Sandouping in China and is over 5 times the size of the Hoover Dam, US. The dam is already partly filled, with the water level scheduled to rise by a total of 113 metres to 175 metres above sea level, by 2009.
Whatever you think about the environmental, social and political issues - please contribute to discussions on these - you can't help being amazed by the scale of this project.

* The integrated Ship Lift will be the world's largest, lifting 12,800 tons over 113 metres
* When complete, the 26 turbines will generate 18,000 megawatts, equivalent to over 10 nuclear power stations
