You know, kind of mellow, laid back, sweet, sultry sort of things.......
you might play them in your car on the way there, or on the road home, or on a warm evening in your cottage before going out for a beer....

Maybe then-

"Down by the Seaside" (I think that's the title) --the mighty Led Zeppelin. Would be good for that even if it didn't have "seaside" in the title.

Well if we're gonna have Led Zep I'd suggest the, "Rain Song" from "Houses of the Holy", a really beautiful song.

Also there's a rather good chance of rain at anytime of year at the great British seaside.

What about," Northern Sky "
by Nick Drake.

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

The inimitable:

I do like to be beside the seaside!
Oh, I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll along the prom, prom, prom,
While the brass band plays tiddleyompompom!

Oh, just let me be beside the seaside!
I'll be beside myself with glee.
There are lots of girls, besides,
That I'd like to be beside,
Beside the seaside, beside the sea.

Works fabulously for Kylie hits too. Which in, and of themselves are a fundamental feature of forgotten seaside towns.

Never really been sure where Bangor/Bangour, is mafleen, is it Wales or Ireland.
I remember the song by FIDDLER'S DRAM 1979. There be a lot of people on flickr who were'nt even born then.

Chorus:
Didn't we have a lovely time
The day we went to Bangor
A beautiful day, we had lunch on the way
And all for under a pound, you know
That on the way back I cuddled with Jack
And we opened a bottle of cider
Singing a few of our favourite songs
As the wheels went around.

New Order, Belle & Sabastian, & big Frank, shaping up to be quite a soundtrack. Not too sure about the Goonies, though.

Have to say Lloyd, if I was on the Dance floor, it would be rather late in the drift.

A fine tune, for a wedding, & a coastal trip.

I would like to add one of the greatest summer songs of all time, ladies and gentlemen:

Ok I'll let somebody else have a go in a moment, but I have to mention Mungo Jerry and 'In The Summertime'. When I was a kid, this was a No 1 for what seemed like the whole summer of 1970. This and Smokey Robinson's 'Tears of a Clown' are two of the great records I remember from my summer holidays back then.

'Black and White Town' by the Doves, purely because it sounded great driving up the front at Blackpool in the p*ssing rain earlier this summer.

I'd hesitate to suggest any of the tosh that goes with the 'scream if you wanna go faster brigage', but I remember sleeping in an old volvo at scarborough with just two drunks and a Shamen tape for company - 'Move move move any mountain.......'

I'll chuck another of my favoutites in the hat whilst i'm here though most of you young groovers won't know it.

Dancing Barefoot, by Patti Smith.

A mighty tune, & of course the most perfect thing to do on the beach,
though maybe not this time of the year.

Always remember some lady friend of mine a long time ago, doing handstands on the sand at Scarborough after a little drink or six, ah... dear me, was quite a day as I recall.

Every tune/picture tells a story.....

I've been listening alot recently to M Ward's
'End of Amnesia', and there is a very simple, melancholic tune on there, called 'psalm', the bit where he sings the lines about a bareback rider, and his voice sings up a tone, ahh, life is sweet, made of songs like this, the coast, the sea, driving home in a car with street lights shining on its windowscreen, smudging in the rain, the evening sunset turning it's nightly blue,,, yes... a bluesy country album that should be in your seaside packup bag!
ps yes up Mr Eds comment above, feel free to start up a thread!

I can remember Nik Kershaw's "won't Let the Sun go down on me"

playing endlessly in South Shields fun fair.

Or Much more appropriate Tunnel of Love by Dire Straits

And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
Oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
...
And now I'm searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
Searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
In any shooting gallery where promises are made
To rockaway rockaway from Cullercoats and Whitley Bay out to rockaway

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard :
"How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here"
In the seaside town
...that they forgot to bomb
Come, Come, Come - nuclear bomb

Which is odd as Nik Kershaw talks about Nuclear Bombs in I won't let the Sun go down on me.

forty winks in the lobby
make mine a G&T
then to my favourite hobby
searching for an enemy
here in your paper houses
stretching for miles and miles
old men in stripey trousers
rule the world with plastic smiles
good or bad, like it or not
it's the only one we've got
i won't let the sun go down on me
i won't let the sun go down
mother nature isn't in it
three hundred million years
goodbye in just a minute
gone forever, no more tears
pinball man, power glutton
vacuum inside his head
forefinger on the button
is he blue or is he red?
break your silence if you would
before the sun goes down for good
i won't let the sun go down on me
i won't let the sun go down

Two more tracks that always make me think of the seaside

Obviously, The Seaside Shuffle from Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs

t's a warm day, the sun is shining
Someone says 'let's go to Brighton'
So we all get up on our friends car
Hold on tight 'cos we're doing ninety miles per hour

We left a London a-where it's hot
We're heading for our favourite spot
Down on the coast way past the town of Crawley
Where the breeze blows and the air tastes of the sea

We a-walk along the promenade pier
Spend a pound or two on fun and beer
Then look around, see what we can see
Bikini girls and everybody smiling happily

And ... Peaches by The Stranglers

Strolling along minding my own business
There goes a girl and a half
She's got me going up and down
Walking on the beaches looking at the peaches

Well I got the notion girl that
You got some sun tan lotion in that bottle of yours
Spread it all over my peeling skin baby
That feels real good
All this skirt
Lapping up the sun
Lap me up
(Why don't you come on and)
Lap me up
Walking on the beaches looking at the peaches

on the beach

Between the eyes of love I call your name
Behind the guarded walls I used to go
Upon a summer wind theres a certain melody
Takes me back to the place that I know
Down on the beach

The secrets of the summer I will keep
The sands of time will blow a mystery
No-one but you and i
Underneath that moonlit sky
Take me back to the place that I know
On the beach

Forever in my dreams my heart will be
Hanging on to this sweet memory
A day of strange desire
And a night that burned like fire
Take me back to the place that I know
On the beach

I have a new one, this is St Augustine, by Band of Horses, amazing sort of harmonies type voices going on

Seems to me maybe we've got maybe two different cd collections here, one mellow and evocative, a little wistful and another of dogem type favourites, a bit louder, more brash, and more fairground ride.
I like the post by the way, earlier on, about a song 'tasting like candyfloss', maybe that's the title for this disc

Personally, I prefer the earlier stuff, but it's a great mine of memoires and dreams were mining here, maybe we need to get these burned and sell em Ed?

I'm not a Queen fan but Seaside Rendevous would sound OK in a run down seaside town, preferably playing on an 8 track in a purple Anglia.

I think for that sort of nostalgia for a time before you were born type of feel you could have some Kenny Ball and his jazzmen or even the shadows or some Joe Meek compliations.

Dress in an old mac, make some cheap sarnies, get some deckhairs in the boot and take some of those.

I would be happy with any Nick Drake, maybe Bryter Later and the perfect one that really is in keeping with this thread is "Say You don't mind" by Colin Bluntstone, yes, forget all my other suggestions, just get that one.

The Roy Harper version of Jethro Tull's "Up the Pool" is a cracker.

"There'll be bucket, spades and bingo, cockles, mussels, rainy days,
seaweed and sand castles, icy waves.
Deck chairs, rubber dinghies, old vests, braces dangling down,
sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze."

Several people suggested Groove Armada's "At The River", but I'd prefer the original song that they sampled .... Patti Paige's "Old Cape Cod".

I love that Jethro Tull one, a good choice, and the Patti Page is on my ipod for the playlist here.

Not that well known and a bit before my time (honest), but Pinball by Brian Protheroe would fit nicely here.

Have to agree with blurredimage and put up my hand for "ghost town" by the specials. I often find myself humming that when walking around these places.

Its got to be Beach Boys Pet Sounds, Only really works when its Winter and pouring with Rain.

The new Goldfrapp album works well in Filey....again when its raining.

But Jim Noir a lancashire based musician has some amazingly haunting songs about the seaside, has that weird eerie tinny sound to it. He has some wonderful songs including lyrics on Blackpool, Morecombe and North Wales. I highly recommend him.

1940s wartime classics work well on the East Yorkshire coast.

I tend to go the the Seaside when its out of season and raining. Hence why all my recommendations invole it to be raining.

Best time to go vicklesby, in fact as I sit typing this the rains lashing down my window. I live in Eastbourne & I'm just about to get out with my camera.

Thanks for your excellent suggestions & thanks to everyone else for making this such a thoroughly wonderful thread.

dunno if anyone remembers, but there was a rip off ska/dub band, the Dead 60's, vaguely popular a few years ago, and they did a song called The Last Resort'.
I think the video is probably more fitting than the song...
