Alice and Lucy are two years old now, and the most beautiful things that I can imagine. Oh I wish that you all could watch them grow up, I am so amazed at their lust for life and how down right brilliant they are. Lucy was rocking in a rocking chair yesterday and I asked her what she was doing and she said " I'm swing . . . I'm rocking!" She had never used the word rocking in that way before. Such are the myriad tiny daily beauties that they show me. Thank you all again for your support, and you better believe that I shall speak of you all to the reporter.

It's another long story, that I'll write later. I'm tired, but they got a helicopter ride to a hospital nearby and we came home today. Lisa is home after 6 weeks in the hospital!

Alice and Lucy
Alice and Lucy

Last Sunday I went for my weekly visit with my beautiful wife, it felt a little different, I warned the folks at work that I might not be back for a while. I got down to LA and we had a pretty normal time of it Sunday night and Monday. Monday night she felt a little different, she wasn't worried, I was, I slept lightly. I was asleep at 1 am when she called her nurse to come check some wetness she had, (I woke up 1/2 way through the visit) they tested it it came up negative for amniotic fluid. She had a few more little patches of wet, but nothing major through the night.
In the morning (7:00am) when the resident Dr came to check on her, they tested the fluid again and it was amniotic fluid, and when the Dr went to check the cervix there was a flood, Lucy's bag had broken. Delivery was initially scheduled for 10:00 am, but we wanted our surgeon/savior to be present, and assist the delivery, so we rescheduled to 1:00 pm.
Lisa was wheeled down to the Labor and Delivery floor at about 10am, she was contracting and beginning labor. She smiled through 3 hours of pain, there was nothing but joy cuz we were going to get to see our babies!
They wheeled her into the OR at 10 after 1pm. She was absolutely beeming, I waited the 30 longest minutes of my life.
I was rushed into the OR and seated at my little stool. Lisa was nervous and happy and excited.
All of a sudden Dr Chmait said, "Get the camera ready!" "Here comes baby A" and he carried Lucy screaming her lungs out passed me slowing so I could take her picture, and he came back and said again, "Get the camera ready!" "Here comes baby B" and he carried Alice screaming her lungs out passed me slowing so I could take her picture.
I cannot describe my feelings in the word that humans use, I doubt that there ever will be a way to describe such a thing.

I was a Daddy!

They cleaned up the babies and I got to cut their chords, and then they were swaddled and Dr Chmait brought Alice over for me to hold Never in my life had everything felt so real and so perfect. I was lost in love.
He took Alice back and brought me Lucy to hold, but only for a few seconds, she was having breathing problems,

I have to stop now, I'll write more later.

Fletcher Gravy  Pro User  says:

Lisa here! I am home! What a whirlwind this has been....

First things first!
Lucy Louise Davis was born on Sept. 23 2008 at 1:50 pm weighing 5 lb 14 oz., 17 inches long
Mary Alice Emelie Davis was born on Sept. 23 2008 at 1:52pm weighing 4lb 14oz., 19 inches long (how she's longer than her sister who was a whole pound bigger than her we don't know. I think they may have mixed up the data...but, both girls have incredibly long legs like Stephen! and really long toes like me!...dancers? swimmers?)

As you all know since Stephen's latest update, we had another miraculous surgery at week 30 and 5 days saving the babies from having to be born very early. Since then, I had been up on the 7th floor in the ante partum unit hoping to get to 35-36 weeks when suddenly in the middle of the night on Tuesday my water broke. We were informed around 7am that morning that since it actually broke and wasn't just ruptured, we would be having our girls that day. I was somewhat nervous because I had really hoped we would make it to 35 weeks or more, but I was also so relieved as the girls had been growing so much in the last 2 weeks prior I was feeling like I was going to pop at anytime. Thankfully, Stephen was already down with me for his weekly visit! He was supposed to leave that day; the girls had perfect timing :) We were taken down to labor and delivery where I labored until about 1pm and then I was wheeled in to the operating room to have a cesarean. I was happy and smiling and surprisingly calm... until I heard Lucy's first cry. I lost it. It was such a gut wrenching relief to hear her breathe her first breath after all we've been through. Alice followed shortly after. There are no words to describe the sound of our girls screaming themselves in to this world. Dr. Chmait assisted in the delivery. He swaddled them and brought them over to us to say hello. Alice came first. Dr. Chmait handed her to Stephen. So tiny but so strong. She is definitely the feisty one. Lucy followed but we couldn't hold her long because she was having a bit of a hard time breathing. Later we found out that her bag of water was the one that broke and as a result of staying in there for 12 hours before delivery she developed an infection. They were both taken to the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). Stephen followed me to Recovery and then went to the NICU to bond with the babies so they wouldn't be alone. On Thursday, we got an estimate of 1-2 weeks that Lucy would need to stay in the NICU just for her infection... there were still several routine tests they had to run. They didn't really give us a time frame for Alice. She obviously had to gain weight and both girls had to have bilirubin treatment to prevent jaundice. That night after having had a conversation about what we were going to do if one baby was released before the other (i.e. where would we stay? would we have to go home? All these questions and everything so up in the air) we got a phone call from the NICU. They told us that if we consented, they had a transporter available for the babies to be transferred to Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo, about 15 minutes from our home. We happily agreed: an answer to our prayers. The girls got their first helicopter ride that night around 10:30pm and arrived safely at Sierra Visita around midnight. Yesterday I was released from the hospital thankfully after treatment was finished for my uterine infection (ouch!). I almost couldn't believe they were letting me out! I felt like a prisoner being released from jail! I was there for 5 weeks and 3 days altogether. I got in the car and we drove around the corner and I couldn't help from bursting in to tears. We have angels all around us. They got us safely home and last night we visited the girls in their new room. They are doing great. They no longer need to be in incubators. Lucy still has an IV because she's not eating as much as she should be--this might have to do with the infection but it was too early to know yet. They were still being monitored as they have a whole new set of hands and doctors now and they have to get used to the girls and figure out what exactly they need. Alice is an excellent eater but slowed down a bit after being transported but it's nothing to worry about and they are making sure she is getting the nutrients she needs via feeding tube. For babies born at 34 weeks and 3 days, they are in fantastic shape. The doctors are impressed and very hopeful that it won’t be long before they get to come home.
We are absolutely in love. The girls sorta looked different at first, probably because of the 1 pound weight difference. They are now only 1/2 a pound apart and are starting to look a lot alike.

I want to thank all of you for your prayers and thoughts and good wishes while I was in the hospital. Stephen received so much love and support and he relayed every bit of it to me. Thank you for your love. You are all in our thoughts and we will let you know as soon as Alice and Lucy are ready to play!

Much love,
Lisa, Stephen, Lucy and Alice :) :) :) :)

Fletcher Gravy  Pro User  says:

here's the whole story all together, it needs editing, but I gotta go finish cooking dinner:
Here's the short version:
At 20 weeks we were diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) (the babies were sharing vessels in the placenta and one (Lucy) was getting most of the nutrients leaving the other (Alice) very little) a week later we met Dr. Ramen Chmait, the greatest fetal surgeon in the universe, He preformed laser coagulation surgery on the shared vessels and cured the TTTS. At the follow up ultrasound he discovered Vasa Previa (one of the babies had one branch of her umbilical vessels running across Lisa's cervix (if the bag of water were to break, that vessel would burst, bleeding out that baby.) Lisa was put on bed rest at home for nine weeks. At week 29 I took her to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital for the remainder of her bed rest.
Here's the update I wrote after the next big scare:
on Thursday the 28 Lisa had an ultrasound, her cervix was funneling and the amniotic sac wall had separated from the uterine wall leaving the vessel that was formerly across the cervix (the vasa previa) dangling (this particular problem had never before been witnessed and will make the literature .The babies were in danger and needed to come out.
--------------------------------------- -----

I got down to LA around 8:00pm, and was met with Lisa's tears. We hugged and prayed in our way, and discussed how were were going to handle this and who was going to stay where; I kept her cheered up by reminding her how strong our babies are; I lotioned her feet and massaged her legs and she fell asleep around 10:00; I layed down and put in my earplugs and drifted on and out of sleep.
The next thing I knew a nurse came into the room and woke us up telling us to answer the phone: it was Dr. Chmait, it was 11:30pm. As I listened to their conversation I figured out what he was calling about.
He was going to do another surgery. He was going to laser coagulate the vasa previa, removing the danger of the baby bleeding out, in an attempt to keep the babies in as long as possible. This was a zero risk surgery, If it failed, they would do a C-section immediately, if it succeeded, the babies would stay in as long as mommy could hold them.
The surgery was to take place at Noon on Friday. Lisa was wheeled away and I did not even say goodbye to her cuz I was told that I was to be allowed into surgery. Well, I wasn't allowed, Lisa was upset, I was upset, and was somewhat vocal about it as I was led to the waiting room.
Dr. Chmait showed up about 15 minutes later and apologized f or the confusion and reminded me that this was for the babies. I was instantly calmed. I waited by the phone in the waitingroom fearing that it would ring and I'd have to run down to witness the C-section. The phone rang twice--for somebody else. Three of the longest hours of my life passed and Dr. Ramen Chmait practically ran into the room High Fived me and said it was a success, he was beaming. I was beaming. This surgery had never before been done this late into a pregnancy, and never before in this situation, in fact this is only the 5th time this surgury has ever been done. I always thought that we were an unique couple, and now I know we are going to be a unique family

Here is the update I wrote after we got home:
Last Sunday I went for my weekly visit with my beautiful wife, it felt a little different, I warned the folks at work that I might not be back for a while. I got down to LA and we had a pretty normal time of it Sunday night and Monday. Monday night she felt a little different, she wasn't worried, I was, I slept lightly. Delivery was initially scheduled for 10:00 am, but we wanted our surgeon/savior to be present, and assist the delivery, so we rescheduled to 1:00 pm.

He took Alice back and brought me Lucy to hold, but only for a few seconds, she was having breathing problems.
They were to stay in the NICU 1-2 weeks and we kept wondering how we were going to be able to stay with them, hotels were out of the question and the Ronald McDonald house was our only option, and it was pretty full. we asked our OBGYN to keep us in the hospital as long as possible, she added an extra day to our stay, we'd be out on Sat. the 27, (this was still the 23rd) I visited with the girls as much as I could for the next two days, Lisa didn't get to hold her girls until th second day :( we came upstairs to her room that night around 5 freaking out a little about the situation. Where would we stay, what would we do, what if one baby is released before the other?????? We had dinner and set about making plans, we had some folks pulling strings to get us up to the pediatric ward (where we could room with them) once the babies stabilized, we had people pulling strings at the Ronald McDonald house, and all of a sudden we got a phone call at 8:30pm, it was the NICU Doctor, there were two spots available at our Sierra Vista Hospital (17 miles from home) and would we like to have them transported there? I told the Dr I'd have to talk to my wife, she was scared and confused (I was elated), she called her mom, she called Teri Dr. Chmait's incredible nurse, she decided it was a good thing to do. It was our babies guardian angel pulling these strings (my grandmother (whom Alice is named after.))
We called back and yes, and I went down (Lisa could not, she had an uterine infection) to see the babies off, the transport team was remarkable, they got the babies all set in the portable isolette and took them on a helicopter home!
It all happened so fast that the next morning when our nurse relayed to our OBGYN that we needed to be discharged and on our way home ASAP she did not understand and had to come to us for a translation. She agreed pulled Lisa's staples and we were discharged at 10 am Friday morning. And I drove my lovely wife home, after a 6 week stay in the hospital.
The Babies are doing fine now and just have to get to eating good and they'll be home with us, and the story will continue for the rest of our lives.

I thought the original thread in the original TBG was deleted too. Would be nice if I was wrong. I copied it before I was deleted though. :)
