About The Seoul Metro Project
* With the popularity of the project and the impossibility of keeping up with everything under one thread, I've started a temporary group dedicated to The Metro Project. It will exist as long as the project is live... then I will burn it to the ground. If you know people I've missed or want to invite someone to climb aboard, please do.
** Post only photos related to The Metro Project, final versions, outtakes, whatever.
The Seoul Metro Project: Field Guide
Flash Parker
Theme: Différance
For those who have heard this word before, you know it's a communications buzzword favored in academic circles. But it will serve just fine right here.
This project is all about discovering place, and the impact of Différance upon that place. As [for most of us] ex-pats living and working in Seoul, the subway is our lifeline to the heart of the city and beyond. I want to explore that. I want you to communicate your experience of the subway, and in turn, Korea, through the visual mode of photography.
Task: Make a single frame at every stop on the metro line. There are 436 stations over 14 lines. This is a big project, and there is room for many contributors.
Every contributor will be asked to provide a photo essay (MAX 500 words) detailing their experience on the metro as it pertains to a specific image. I don't want a round up of all your photos; discuss the meaning, as it pertains to Différance, behind your favorite/most important frame.
Time: I want this project to be finished and ready to be edited by March 1st, 2010. That's not as much time as you might think, so if you're involved, get out there and get shooting.
Production: I'm going to put this together in a Blurb Book (or something similar) where everyone who has had a hand in making this project real will see their work published.
Who: If you can get back to me with your choice for line and section (10-15 stops per person is more than enough) that would be great. Keep in mind that I'm taking line 1. I'm greedy like that.
* You can make your photos digitally or on film, but if you choose to shoot film you're going to need high res scans, not the kind you get done at costco or E-mart for 2,000 won a roll. A single 20MB scan of a negative (from 35mm or 120 film) is going to run you about 3,000 won at most labs. Your files MUST be minimum 3MB and 300dpi resolution for inclusion in the book. Keep that in mind when you are out shooting.
Database Updates:
Here's what we have spoken for currently. If you could get back to me and tell me how many stops you're doing (like I mentioned, 10-15 min. would be great).
