February - Marianne's Blocks
|
February is my month and I've been thinking about what style of blocks I would like you all to make for me. (Sorry about this long thread, I tried to make a mosaic but most of the photos I had the owners opted out of the mosaic maker so it wouldn't work)
I have some Ideas, I've made a practice block to see how much fabric you will all need and I've pulled some fabrics and tomorrow I'm going to buy a few more fabrics in the colors I would like and then I'll be mailing the packets out late next week.
Here is a photo of my practice block which I made this week and will be donating to Breast Cancer Awareness. I loved making this block and the tutorial was easy to follow.
I love modern styles with big chunky blocks. So I will be asking for a 15.5 unfinished size block. I am going to ask that you use the tutorial at Oh, Fransson.

I think you can all have some fun with this and I would love it if you all put your own twist on it something like what Elizabeth made here.
Just ideas: I'm thinking a couple smaller blocks than the tutorial & staggered and bordered within the block, or a version similar to what Elizabeth made above or an off center focus or whatever else you can think to do with it.
I would like some kind of narrow inner border on the block using a gray solid (I may change my mind on this and make it white) that I will mark in the packet and a larger outer border to bring it up to size using the largest print in your packet.
Four of you will be getting lime and gray fabrics, four will be getting pink and grey fabrics, and four will be getting lime, pink, and gray fabrics to use in the blocks. (If you want to use a focus print of your own as one of the little pieces in the block I am fine with it as long as it goes with the color scheme).
If you think the tutorial is to finicky here are a few ideas you could go with that are more of an improvisational style, I would be fine with this too as long as the narrow inner and wide outer border are still there to bring it up to size.
Here are 2 quilts completed with the tutorial.
I hope you all have a great time with this and learn something new too. I think you are all going to come up with some fabulous blocks, and I can hardly wait to see them. Please feel free to post them in flckr as you finish them.
If you have any questions let me know. I'll be writing something like this up and sending it with the fabrics.
Also, let me know in this thread what you think of this plan, I wouldn't want to do something that makes any of you uncomfortable, I want you all to have fun!

Marianne, I was just checking out Elizabeth's tutorial too. (I'm trying to resist starting her paintbox quilt-along, but that is another story). While it really isn't usually my style to be so organized, I would really like to give this block a try. That's what these bees are for, to try something new.

I have my packages ready, is it OK with you all if I mail them out tomorrow - if I wait until Friday they will be sitting in a post office somewhere over the weekend?

I'm ready! I was interested in this quilt when I saw it onlone, but didn't want to make an entire project - I'm glad this will give me the chance to try Elizabeth's technique.
