About THE LONDON BOOK
In 1980 a book was published called The London Book.
It was a photographic representation of some of the "milestones, street names, bollards, street lamps, public seats, drinking fountains, horse troughs, telephone kiosks, pillarboxes, litterbins, railings, gateposts, animals, coalhole covers, manhole covers, fire hydrants, gates, doors, street and house numbers, fanlights and other doorway details, knobs and knockers, bell-pushes, letterboxes, footscrapers, balconies, windows, drainpipes, air vents, chimneys, rooftops, spires, weathervanes, clocks, sculpture on buildings, heads, statues, lettering on buildings, brick patterns, mosaic tiles, cobbles and setts, grilles and gratings, plaques, trade signs, small buildings, shop fronts, signposts and notices, graffiti and jokes, pub signs and crests of London.
7 photographers took 8,000 photos. Only 2,000 were chosen for the book.
In his foreword for the book Sir Hugh Casson said that it ws \'more like a birdspotter\'s notebook than a guide - and just as indispensable ... fun for the reader who, eyes sharpened by the treasures so affectionately listed on these pages, will be able to seek out and enjoy new ones for himself (sic)." "
So, using more photographers and hopefully more photos, let\'s document London together.
It\'s not all about \'artistic talent\' (although that is always appreciated!) - it\'s not about the \'familiar streets, parks, squares and monuments but about those details of which all these architectural elements are composed.\'
This is a documentary of London - the London which we sometimes do not take the time to stop and look at.
