I really like the lay out and how easy it is.. I was up and running in about 10 minutes, 10 pictures, people are commenting and hearting, text is easy to read... and the navigation is very nice, also the top pictures are really top pictures!! I'm enjoying it and will probably buy

On the upper right of your page is a link called settings. Click that. You can fill in your profile including uploading an "avatar."

The site looks really nice and I think the pictures look better there. However, I feel the site is a lot slower than flickr. For me is taking forever to load each shot.

Not sure it has groups.
I had a brief back and forth with the founder wherein I was extolling the virtues of forums/groups. He said that he had been reluctant, but that I was among several photographers who had approached him about them and that they are looking at the best way to implement them.
He was very responsive...nice to see.

Flickr should've adopted my idea for a Skunkworks group. Different groups of enthusiasts keep peeling off to other sites (Instagram being the other obvious example) that are keen on photography. Flickr appeals to much wider audience, but certainly having a whole bunch of socially active, talented photographers adds value for everyone. So they're reluctant to roll out major, site-wide changes lest the masses revolt. Hence, a skunkworks group to run alongside Flickr, sorta like Google Labs.
I'll try 500px when I get home, it's blocked at work.

Flickr should have adopted lots of ideas...they've become bloated and slow.
They are the only game in town with storage, sharing AND groups. If someplace like 500px can add the community portion, they will steal away a portion of the enthusiast crowd here.

rose, you may have to add a last name, it did the same thing to me and i had to add a first and last name plus a site...i added "Pics" as my last name
and how do i add pics to my collection, i got the url, but the drag and click doesn't work and i tried to click "all your uploads" but that didn't work either

The site is really cool and the pictures look awesome there. Couple of questions:
* Is there an easy way to start follow the people that are following you? In Activity you can see who started to follow you, but the messages are mixed with all the comments, faves, etc, etc,. I’m also missing the “This person is a contact” message to easily know if you are already a contact/friend of that person.
* What’s the difference between the “Like” button and the “heart”?
* Did you find a way to see who voted and faved your pictures?
* Do not why, but the site is not recognizing my tags when I upload my pictures.

Click on their stream and click Follow top left. After that in the top left there will be a little green check mark saying following..you can also unfollow.
What’s the difference between the “Like” button and the “heart”?
The Like button from what I have seen is a voting button.. the more "likes you get" the more points your photo is worth. There seems to be a view like ratio..perhaps "hearts" are factored in as well. The heart is simply a way of saying you really like the picture and goes to your favorites section in your page... this means you really like the picture and want others to see it too when they click on your favorites.
* Did you find a way to see who voted and faved your pictures?
NO I haven't even looked and don't really care. I like it like that... no people "liking" your photo for the sake of knowing they might get one back...pretty brilliant....no sheep herding that way either.
* Do not why, but the site is not recognizing my tags when I upload a pictures. I don't know the answer to that question.

it's a fun distraction from flickr, but i'm sticking mainly with flickr for now. without the groups, i think it may get boring fast, but if i really start getting into 500, i'll consider paying for it
also, i didn't get an answer to my question...

Clearly, the buzz right now is a combination of a bunch of photo enthusiasts all descending at once before the snapshooting masses. So the popular images are nice, the gamers haven't crashed the algorithm yet, folks are only uploading their best few images and all are being seduced by the high quality of the average.
Pics do look better, compared to the regular Flickr photo page. Not sure I get why the score is plastered in large type on every square photo, but whatevs.
So we'll see. Would be nice to see another social photo sharing site emerge as a real contended-- the rest to date have proven to be pretenders (Facebook is a different class).

Jordy...it's like a tenfold drop compared to a "Like."
Someone 'disliked' my Kona swim shot and it went from 90 to 83 in one vote while ;likes' were moving it up <1 point at a time.
I think the relative transparency of the system makes it too easy to attack photographers you don't like or to just move yours up a few notches by 'dislikeing' a few above yours.

Ok, the REAL test -
Who's going to pony up real money to be "awesome"?
I'm already paying for the "Pro" account on flickr - and if I do spend any more money for internet sites (check that thought, Cathy!), it's going to be for a domain site/smugbug photo type site
In short, this will be a novelty distraction for a while, methinks.
Is anyone here thinking about paying to become "Awesome"?
