I've always pronounced it the same way as you would say croquet, & with a silent "T".

The word is derived from French, so I agree with Robyn the slug that it's pronounced like "crow-shay."

A good friend of mine went though a literal pronunciation phase in college, calling her I.D. her "id", rhyming café with "safe", et cetera, just to be funny. She used to say "CROTCH-it" for crochet. I still call it that sometimes, just because it was funny. But yeah, the correct pronunciation is the French way, cro-SHAY.

This is where the term "Crotchety" came from. A person concentrating on their intricate work were considered to be Crotch-ety if interrupted and prone to anger. This caused a lot of men especially to say Crotch-ting as the crafting name.
My Great-Grandmother told me this story many years ago. She was married to an Irish man and his Mother was often interrupted and my G-GF would say she was crotchety. LOL JUst thought I would share.

crochet .. etymologically .. is french .. thus .. crow-shay .. or at least it is 'en angleterre' .. but then .. poh-tay-toe .. poh-tar-toe .. u what ?! .. what's she on about?! .. and why is Robyn a slug? .. does that mean she only eats lettuce?
