About That Which is Epic
Photos which express a certain quality of being epic; which suggest a far greater and more impressive tale than only one photo could possibly show. Posed conceptual work is welcome alongside photojournalism and street candids. Any photos which don't both suggest that certain quality of epicness, as well as maintain a certain level of quality, will be removed from the group.
Think man walking on the moon, the climax of a historic battle, a long-running personal struggle for redemption, climbing a mountain that has never yet been scaled, stepping off into the unknown, struggling for personally held beliefs against the majority. Both the dramatic and the subtle are welcome, but only the epic.
So, the question remains, what is epic? Well, anything that might not be considered out of place in a historic or modern-day heroic epic or saga. As the American Heritage Dictionary puts it, "Surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size" or "Heroic and impressive in quality."
My personal judge of whether a photo is epic enough to be included is to play the theme music to 2046. If it works with the shot, the photo is epic.
Perhaps Hugo*'s thousand words say it more aptly:
