About The Open Championship
On 17 October 1860, the first Open Championship is played over the 12 hole links course at Prestwick, Scotland. Willie Park Senior took the title to become the first Open Champion.
In 1871, The Open came under joint control of Prestwick Gold Club, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.
1873 saw the first presentation of the Claret Jug, The Golf Champion Trophy, to that year's champion, Tom Kidd - winner of the 13th Open Championship at St Andrews.
In 1893, Royal St George's, Sandwich and Royal Liverpool joined the Championship rota, and the representatives became known as the Delegates of the Associated Clubs. The 34th Open Championship was played in 1894 in England for the 1st time, at St George's in Sandwich.
In 1920 the Royal and Ancient takes over the running of The Open and this continues to this day, being played over links courses.
Carnoustie hosted it's first Open in 1937, with Henry Cotton winning despite the weather!
