Group DescriptionThe Hart's Mill Project is a community alliance that has been formed to campaign for a more sustainable model of development at the Hart’s Mill precinct in Port Adelaide, South Australia. With the Port waterfront undergoing huge change, including the senseless demolition of most of our precious maritime heritage to make way for characterless apartment buildings, the Mills offer us all one last opportunity to get it right.
The alliance is calling for the historic Mills to be incorporated into a world class cultural centre, with an inspired and sensitive conversion, as opposed to private luxury dwellings proposed by the developer. This type of development would respect the heritage of Port Adelaide, promote public space and community use, and include arts facilities, cultural interpretation, community gardens and public access.
The Hart’s Mill Project brings together local artists, heritage activists and residents, including the Port of Adelaide branch of the National Trust (PoANT) and the Port Adelaide Artists’ Forum (PAAF). It also calls for the broader community to come on board, as we see the development of the Mills as something that should not only benefit our local community, but also, and more importantly, become a cultural asset for the rest of the state and beyond. The coalition is planning activities on many fronts including community events, online campaigning, lobbying and cultural action.
