Bellgirl  Pro User  says:

Hello all! Thanks for joining together with me to create “The Busy Sea at night”!

All blocks received!!! Thanks guys!
Purpose of Quilt: For my sweet four-year-old son, who needs another quilt ;)

Feel of the quilt: Quirky, busy, boyish. The ‘feel’ is like Teaginny’s Busy Town quilt (below).

Quilt for my son - pieced top by teaginny

Topic: ‘The Busy Sea at night’. Whatever that means to you- here are some ideas.:
Water-craft: yacht, clipper, tugboat, ferry, ark, tanker, submarine, windsurfer, speed boat, pirate ship, sea plane.
Creatures: Fish, whale, octopus, mermaid, sea bird, penguin, shark, turtle etc.
The night sky: Stars, constellations.
Buildings: Lighthouse, beacon, marker buoy.
Please visit my gallery for examples and patterns: www.flickr.com/photos/bellgirl/galleries/72157626260914872/

Block Type: Pieced pictures. Use any technique for piecing, eg. paper piecing, foundation piecing, improvised. As basic as you like. Simple, naive, angular and wonky are all fine.

If you need a small amount of turned-edge appliqué for a detail (see the wheels on Teaginny’s Busytown quilt), go for it.

Please note: We won’t include ‘the sea’- the entire picture will be surrounded by the dark blue. If you’re doing a boat, you can just finish the block at the bottom of the hull, or with the dark blue if you like. We will keep the bottom of boats horizontal, as if it’s a calm (but busy!) sea.

Colour palette: A deep blue background (Kona Nightfall) with bright colours that shine out. The deepest blue is the background fabric. Nautical, blues, reds, yellows, bright white, oranges, greens, browns. There’s no need to include all the colours in your block- just a few, or even one (plus background) in a block is fine. For an example, look at the use of colour in Teaginny’s quilt.

Adding Fabric: Please feel free to add fabric to my blocks, in keeping with the colour palette. You are welcome to add a little patterned fabric for a flag, sail or other detail. Touches of pink if necessary for flesh, pelican’s beak, etc. No bright pink or purple please!

Block size: around 5” square or less. The block doesn't need to be square. I will sash them in the dark blue, so you don’t need to have your picture surrounded by the blue backing. You may need to reduce the size of some of the free patterns linked from the gallery.

Tutorials and patterns: You are very welcome to design your own. There are also plenty of patterns online, some linked from my gallery: www.flickr.com/photos/bellgirl/galleries/72157626260914872/ Please note: You may need to reduce the size of some of the free patterns linked from the gallery to make a block of 5" or less.

Techniques: Any technique for piecing that suits you.
Here is a great youtube video on foundation paper piecing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bc1mU0LMF8

Here’s Ayumi’s freezer paper technique: ayumills.blogspot.com/2009/01/downloadable-teapot-pattern...

If you’d like to try improvised piecing, Teaginny shows some tutorials of her technique here: teaginnydesigns.blogspot.com/2010/09/around-town.html

Scraps: Please return useable scraps, especially the deep blue background. I'll use them to make the rest of the blocks- there will be 35.

Number of blocks: Please make two blocks if possible, but if they’re doing your head in, one is fine!

Hi Jo, I'm in such a frazzle I decided to let the post office take care of them all at once! If I dropped it round myself you might not have got it until August ;) We must get the boys to the skate park soon- I've given the Bug his two-wheeler!

BTW Amy, your will arrive a day later than the other NSW folks. That's because it's a bit heavier and the carrier pigeon will need to rest half-way. Katrina, I'm trying to do that one-package thing with yours, so it's not in the post yet- I'm going to work on your blocks tonight sorreeeee!

No problem Annabel! I did that to Andi last month as well. Also, our post is threatening a strike on Friday, so that would take it out of your hands altogether!

Bellgirl  Pro User  says:

Cool! Amy , here's a brief for the submarine- the blue batik-ish stuff is the surrounding sea, and because it won't be on the front you don't need to follow the conventions for those ones- I've included some yellows but you can add any fabric you like, print or plain, and use any technique. Around 12 ", or bigger if you like, doesn't need to be square! You are welcome to do a mini version for the front as one of your Bee blocks if you like.

although I'd planned this for the back of the quilt, I may make it into a separate quilt or cushion, I'll need to think...

I have to say, mates, I'm feeling quite emotional seeing what you're making for my little boy's quilt. We are going to treasure this.

Hi Annabel. I made a sailboat and lighthouse for you today. I hope they aren't too similar to ones you already have. I haven't started on your side swap submarine yet other than printing out the pattern from the the submarine link you gave.

Bellgirl  Pro User  says:

Oooh exciting, thanks Amy! As Sheridan said, I will need lots of boats for a great quilt, same goes for lighthouses- and of course they will all be different anyway, so everyone feel free to make more of 'the same'!

Curse that ash cloud- have fun at the quilt show!

Bellgirl  Pro User  says:

Has everyone seen Amy's and Jo's blocks in the pool? Aren't they delightful! Very. Very. Excited! That's eight blocks blocks now from the 'hive, and four of my own- woot woot woot!

Just in case anyone is wondering, this quilt really can't have too many boats. A few comments have wondered if the blocks were too similar to the other boats, but there's absolutely no problem. If you want to do one or two simple boats, even using the same pattern and different colours, that's absolutely fine. Same goes for lighthouses- lighting is very important when you are having a midnight regatta!

Also I really hope no-one will find this task a burden. If you have a look at Teaginny's quilt at the top of this page, you'll see how good the simple trees and houses look as part of the collection. Rest assured, you don't need to stress because simple is beautiful.

Indeed the blocks that have already been done are outrageously gorgeous. I would like to do mine next week in the relative peace of the school hols. Life is a little less demanding then. Is that okay? Sorry for being late :(

Hi gang, how are we doing? I've received blocks, from Sheridan, Andi and Jo, and Amy's are on the way. I've made six and Jo is doing another, so that's 16 down, 19 to go. Belinda will do hers over the school hols, and Katrina has only just got her fabric (I think) because of the postal strike. The North American girls would have got their fabric a bit late.

I just want to say again that sweet and simple is perfect for this quilt, so if anyone is feeling overwhelmed by some of the offerings, please be assured that a very simple boat will hit the spot. You could find a pattern you like and use it twice. You can make your mark by including a patterned piece from your stash for a sail. Here are some patterns that don't involve foundation piecing, if that's not your thing:

quilting.about.com/od/babyquiltpatterns/ss/sailboats-baby...
www.surfsidequiltersguild.org/Portals/1/files/Sail%20boat...
www.quiltblocklibrary.com/quilt/SailboatQuiltBlock/537/

Also, I've just made a block with the moon, So if anyone likes making stars and would like to make a group of small white ones, that would look very sweet.

If you burn out after one block, one is fine- I'm happy to try out some more patterns myself ;)

For those of us not affected by the Canada Post strike, how are we all going with Annabel's blocks?
Belinda's gorgeous fabric is already on its way (I believe) so wouldn't it be great to have a nice clean slate for July's blocks and have Annabel's blocks all finished up and mailed?
They are fun blocks to make, I promise!!!!
