About TEXAS STATE RAILROAD-SAVE THE RAILROAD A PIECE OF TEXAS HISTORY
All About the Texas State Railroad including the two parks it connects, Palestine and Rusk State Parks. This includes any pictures of or in the trains, the train stations, views and people along the way!
The state of Texas has implemented severe budget cuts to Texas Parks and Wildlife. This includes our wonderful railroad which is adjacent to Rusk State Park and Palestine State Park. The railroad has already lost employees as part of the cutbacks.
According to the Texas State Railroad Website, "The Texas State Railroad was promised $500,000.00 NEW money from the Legislative Budget Board to restart Palestine trains, but that money never came. Instead, the Parks Dept is having to shuffle money around within it's own department, and borrow $250,000.00 from the TSRR's 2007 budget in order to run the Palestine trains. This is a deplorable way to run our state parks. We have been told that the train will become a "static display" after this year, shutting down our historic railroad, and laying off most of the staff. We cannot allow this to happen. The TSRR is vital to our economy and is the major tourist atraction in East Texas. We cannot allow our vintage rail cars to sit and rust from neglect. "
The website goes on to asks that you "...contact Gov. Perry, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst and Speaker of the House Tom Craddick to ask them to properly fund all our state parks with OUR TAX MONEY. Texas is now 49th per capita in the U.S. for funding of state parks!"
